The Book Dabbler: AWP 2015 Off-Site Events


The Book Dabbler, here, keeping you up-to-date on all the beer-friendly off site readings for this year’s Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) conference in the Twin Cities. Your favorite taprooms and beer bars will be full of literary people from all over the country. So make sure to get out and enjoy some ales and authors this week.

Wednesday, April 8

Festival of Language 2015 at Brit’s Pub (free, 4-11pm)

This will be the seventh annual Festival of Language featuring established and emerging writers in three sets of rapid-fire readings with over 60 participants reading for a maximum of five minutes each. Check the website for updates. Email [email protected] with questions.

Literary Death Match at Nomad World Pub (doors at 6:30pm, show 7-8pm, $7 pre-order, $10 at the door)

Four authors read their work for seven minutes or less, and the final two play a vaguely literary game to determine a champion. The competing writers will include Roxanne Gay (Bad Feminist) and Mark Doten (The Infernal), and the all-star judging panel comprises Ben Percy (The Dead Lands), POS of Doomtree, and Susan Orleans (The Orchid Thief).

Thursday, April 9

New Shit Show (free, 5pm) and SLEET REED (free, 6:30-9:15pm) at Icehouse

One of City Pages’ favorite literary moments of 2014, NSS features authors performing brand new work, including locals Allison Broeren and Chantz Erolin. Then stick around for Sleet Magazine, and special guests Richard Jarrette, GE Patterson and Deborah Keenan among a fabulous lineup of readers.

SpringGun, Noemi and 1913 Present: The Event 3 at Harriet Brewing (free, 6:30pm)

SpringGun Press invites you to their annual AWP off-site reading event. Join readers Bruce Covey, Brent Armendinger, Ryo Yamaguch, Kristen Evans, Eric Suzanne, Aby Kaupang, Caren Beilin and more TBA.

Four Way Books Offsite Reading at 612brew (free, 7pm)

Join NYC’s Four Way Books for a poetry reading featuring Andrea Cohen, Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr., Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Josh Kalscheur, Paul Otremba, & Gregory Pardlo.

The Pinch and Sycamore Review at Liquor Lyle’s (free, 7pm)

Hennepin-Lake’s finest beer bar is hosting a terrific lineup of readers, including Julie Carr, Mary Biddinger, J’Lyn Chapman, Matthew Cooperman, Aby Kaupang, Paul Lisicky, Aaron McCollough, Siwar Masannat and Andrew S. Nicholson.

Friday, April 10

Pints and Prose at Kieran’s Irish Pub (free, 5-9pm)

Join Think Piece Publishing at the Poet’s Corner stage at Kieran’s downtown. Featured readers will be Janet Burroway, author of Losing Tim; Andy Steiner, author of How to Survive: The Extraordinary Resilience of Ordinary People; Julie Barton, author of the upcoming memoir Dog Medicine, and music from Adam Levy, who will be playing songs from his forthcoming record Naubinway.

Women Writing Scandal at Nomad World Pub (free, 6-8pm)

Head over to the Nomad for a pint and an reading featuring women writers of various genres whose work explores the boundaries of propriety. Featuring: DeMisty Bellinger, Daisy Hernández, Julie Iromuanya, Serena Lin, Arra Lynn Ross, and Renee Simms.

Tell Stories Without Shame: A Nonfiction Reading with Under the Gum Tree at Mason’s Barre (free, 6pm)

Conduit, Fence, Ugly Duckling Presse Poetry Extravaganza at Harriet Brewing (free, 7-11:45pm)

Conduit, Fence and Ugly Duckling Presse have joined forces to present a night of luminary poets including Corina Copp, Ben Fama, Dobby Gibson, Jennifer Mackenzie, James Shea and Dara Weir. Dreamland Faces will provide musical interludes and tunes from DJ Fred Schmalz will follow the reading. Food truck TBD on hand.

Rain Taxi Presents: A Literary Tribute to Grant Hart and Hüsker Dü ($10, 9-11pm, at Patrick’s Cabaret, 3010 Minnehaha Ave. S., Mpls.)

Writers from near and far gather and pay tribute to Minneapolis-based songwriter Grant Hart and seminal band Hüsker Dü. Writers include John Beer, James Brubaker, Paula Cisewski, Maria Damon, Matthew Derby, Michael Fournier, Tim Horvath, Laurie Lindeen, Daniel Mahoney, Hoa Nguyen, Constance Squires, Justin Taylor, Joel Turnipseed, and maybe a surprise guest or two. Then, a conversation with Grant Hart about his most recent album, The Argument — and the influence of literature on his music. The evening will conclude with a short set of music by Hart; local brews, snacks, and swag will be on hand throughout for this special, not to be missed event. Tickets available through Rain Taxi.

Bizzaro Bash 3000 at Grumpy’s Downtown (free, 5-8pm)

Drink some fine beer and enjoying readings from cult bizarro authors Justin Grimbol, Michael Allen Rose, Tiffany Scandal, Rios De La Luz, Eric Hendrixson, Bix Skahill, Gabino Iglesias, MP Johnson and more. (Eraserhead Press, Bizarro Pulp Press and more.)

The Rumpus and Fence present at Bryant Lake Bowl ($7/$5 with AWP badge, 7-10pm, doors at 6pm)

Join The Rumpus and Fence for an evening of readings by Antonia Crane, Nick Flynn, Ottessa Moshfegh, J. Ryan Stradal, and Amber Tamblyn.
