If you don’t have any idea of what to expect on the food front when you truck out to Hopkins, Thirty Bales may surprise you. Established with the culinary chops of the team behind the deeply farm-to-table restaurant Wise Acre, Thirty Bales occupies the physical space of the former Big 10 sports bar but brings an entirely new ethos to Mainstreet.
Its menu is thoughtfully sourced, seasonally focused, and full of hearty choices that are full of flavorful ingredients without feeling overloaded or pretentious.
One of the most appealing choices on a recent May day was the Cedar Planked Salmon Salad Sandwich ($15), an enthusiastic recommendation from our server. The open-faced sandwich is spring on a plate—a balanced mix of the mild flavor of the planked salmon, the brightness of the lemon-caper dressing, and the mellow chew of the grilled pumpernickel bread. Onions, radish, asparagus, and arugula offer up a garden of crispy green flavor and texture to cradle and support the fish, dressing, and bread.
The Dish: Cedar Planked Salmon Salad Sandwich, $15
The Place: Thirty Bales, 1106 Mainstreet, Hopkins, MN
The Reason: It’s a remarkably light, fresh, pleasant lunch that evokes the springtime that we all deserve
