Excitement abounds here at Easy & Oskey! Introducing Grapefruit, our first new bitters flavor since we launched the Make Your Own Bitters Kits in April 2013. More than just bitter citrus, this kit offers the warming spice of galangal (Thai ginger) to add depth and richness to these delicious bitters.
There is a saying, “When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.” Well, the Spiced Pear Liqueur from St. George Spirits is certainly not a problem, but it proved to be a perfect nail for our new Grapefruit hammer.
Incredibly complex and aromatic, this liqueur from the St. George distillery out of San Francisco tastes like a gently boozy, bittersweet version of a pear tarte tatin. At a mere 20% ABV (or 40 proof), use this liqueur as a substitute for vermouth to put a holiday spin on your favorite classic cocktails like the Manhattan or Martinez. Here, we’ve opted to keep the vermouth and supplement with the Spiced Pear Liqueur in this deliciously simple version of a sort of brandy manhattan we are dubbing—The Lowry.
Conceived at a dinner party in the Lowry Hill neighborhood of Minneapolis, this cocktail was an instant hit. Three quality ingredients, a bit of bitter citrus from our Grapefruit bitters, and no garnish. Except if you would consider a slice of an actual pear tarte tatin… Then by all means, garnish away.
2 oz Pierre Ferrand Cognac
1½ oz St. George Spirits Spiced Pear Liqueur
1 oz Cocchi Torino Sweet Vermouth
¼ tsp Easy & Oskey Grapefruit bitters
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with clean ice. Stir for 20–30 seconds to dilute, combine, and chill. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a slice of tarte tatin, or nothing at all.
Consider using the St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur in our hot toddy recipe. Simply replace the simple syrup with the Spiced Pear Liqueur, and the rum with the Cognac.
