Pedals and Pull-Tabs: The dive bars of U.S. Bike Route 41

Superior, Wisconsin

The Viking Lounge & Liquor Store • 1501 N 5th St

During your extended Duluth stay, hop across the border to this endearingly run-down and rugged establishment, where “stumble” is the recommended transit and there’s a gigantic Pabst Blue Ribbon sign hanging outside.

Who’s Bar & Grill • 1114 Tower Ave

Whose bar? Who’s Bar! Who’s Who? No idea, but we’re tantalized by Who’s Firecracker Burger, a burger created for the Battle of the Burgers contest. It’s not on the menu, but ask and you might just receive.

Two Harbors

Earthwood Inn, Bar, and Grill • 933 Stanley Rd

All camped out? Bed down at Earthwood, whose rustic cabin-esque rooms provide views of Lake Superior from the decks. Across the parking lot is a bar with all the fixin’s.

Landing 61 Sports Bar • 629 7th Ave

If the giant sign out front reading “cocktails” wasn’t clear enough, this place serves drinks. What more do you want from your dive? How about pull-tabs, flat-screen TVs, shuffleboard, pool, and toga parties? Boom!

Beaver Bay

Green Door • 1002 Main St

The name’s no lie. The front door of this historic muni—a publicly-owned bar and liquor store—is emerald green. Stop in for its extensive Minnesota craft beer collection and glory in our state’s beautiful bounty of brewing.

Gunflint Tavern • 111 W  Wisconsin St

This brewpub poured its first house-made beer in 2014, and it’s won Northern Wilds Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Beer Selection, Best Music Venue, and Best Ethnic Fare. Locals recommend the Asian Big Bowl: jumbo shrimp, scallops, and whole wheat noodles with shiitake mushrooms and veggies accented by ginger and seaweed. That’s a step up from chicken strips.

Grandma Rays • 17 1st Ave W

Get it? Grandma Rays in Grand Marais. Your penultimate tour stop on this gigantic bar crawl includes home-style cooking, cold beer, and cocktails.

Grand Portage

Grand Portage Lodge & Casino • 70 Casino Dr

300-some bike miles, 84 jalapeno poppers, 43 cheeseburgers, 900 pull-tabs, and 666 Pabst Blue Ribbons and Miller Lites later… After that truly superhuman achievement, you get to soak in a hot tub and gamble away all the money you have left at this lodge and casino.

Truly, you are the Paul, Paulina, or Paulinx Bunyan of bikers.
