Celebrate 10 Years of Art Shanty Projects On Ice at Soo Visual Arts Center
January 9, 2016 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Freezing temperatures, arctic wind chills, and lack of sun may keep some folks inside counting the days until Spring. But for thousands of hardy Minnesotans, mid-Winter is the best time to celebrate the arts. The February 2016 return of Art Shanty Projects’ On-Ice Program to White Bear Lake, MN, brings back the heart-warming tradition of transforming a frozen lake surface into an interactive community filled with eclectic structures and unique performances. For those who can’t wait until opening weekend to suit up and head outdoors, there is another way to Celebrate 10 Years of Art Shanty Projects On Ice.
An exhibition of curated photographs and other ephemera from former shanties and performers will be on display at Soo Visual Arts Center, 2909 Bryant Avenue South, Suite 101, Minneapolis. The public is invited to an reception on January 9, 2016, 6pm-9pm where patrons can view the collection commemorating artists – past and present – and inspired visions brought to life during Art Shanty Projects’ uniquely Minnesotan festival on ice.
The event is hosted by Art Shanty Projects’ Board of Directors and made possible through in-kind donations from Soo Visual Arts Center, Bryant Lake Bowl, and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. Photos, posters, and other Art Shanty Projects’ memorabilia will be available for sale with all proceeds going to benefit the upcoming On-Ice Program in White Bear Lake, MN.
“Each year curious locals, regional artists and visitors from beyond our borders brave the harshest weather on an ice-covered landscape to animate a village filled with creative structures and lively performances,” notes Witt Siasoco, Art Shanty Projects’ Artistic Director and curator of the exhibition at Soo VAC. “The display of photographs from years past demonstrates how artists have used these frozen landscapes outside of established cultural norms to change perceptions about artists, public spaces and traditional practices in exciting and expansive ways.”
For 10 years, Art Shanty Projects has organized a month-long festival on a frozen lake surface into an interactive, artist-driven temporary community that expands notions of art and artist. The 2016 On-Ice Program will take place on White Bear Lake every weekend during February 2016. The program is free and open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-4pm.
