Modist 'Deviation Series' Launch

To mark its sixth-month anniversary, Modist Brewing Company is launching a new series of experimental beers they’re calling the Deviation Series. The first two beers in the series will be tapped at 7pm and 8pm, respectively, on Oct. 14 at Modist’s North Loop taproom.

Deviation beers are brewed in small, taproom-only batches and fermented in Modist’s small 10-barrel fermenter—a vessel installed six months ago just for this purpose. The Deviation Series is head brewer Keigan Knee’s playpen. It’s where new recipes are designed, where techniques are tested, and where all of Modist’s beers begin.

According to the brewery:

“The name ‘deviation’ speaks to both us as deviants (consciously departing from the conventional brewing world) and also to the scientific/mathematical calculation of deviation (a measured distance from the mean). It’s the embodiment of our vision statement:

“At Modist, our aim is to modify beer and how it is perceived by defying rules and expectations. We don’t abide by established style guidelines and refuse to bend to pre- conceived notions. We push past traditional brewing by embracing creativity and unconstrained experimentation, taking an innovative approach to ingredients and techniques in order to harness raw inspiration and create a new beer experience.”

Deviation beers only receive a number—they won’t be christened with their own name or produced in larger quantities unless they are a success in the taproom (measured strictly by how popular they are with taproom patrons).

The first two Deviation beers will be released in Modist’s taproom on Friday, Oct. 14th. Deviation 001 will be tapped at 7 pm and Deviation 002 at 8 pm. The Modist crew will be giving away merchandise and other goodies to folks in the taproom every 30 minutes from 6-9 pm.

Deviation 001 is a dark beer, Modist’s first, brewed with pilsner, rye, wheat and coffee malts and hopped with Amarillo, Cascade, and Columbus hops in favor of aroma and flavor. Its balance of mild bitterness and plush mouthfeel soften the spicy character of the rye and highlight the roasted coffee notes. Only 17 kegs produced. 5.6% ABV, 43 IBU, 21 SRM.

Deviation 002 is brewed with 100% wheat malt and hopped with absurd amounts—over 4 lbs per barrel—of Citra, Bravo, and Ella both late in the boil and in dry hop. The exclusive use of wheat malt makes this beer extremely soft and smooth on the palate and creates a natural haze. The hops lend amazingly juicy hop flavors and aromas of citrus and tropical fruits. The yeast used in this beer complete the experience by imparting additional flavors of peach and apricot. Only 20 kegs produced. 7% ABV, 88 IBU, 4 SRM.
