Bauhaus Brew Labs co-owner and head brewer Matt Schwandt said when given the choice of who to work with, it was a “no-brainer” to choose August Schell Brewing Company. “It was an opportunity for two great lager-centric breweries to collaborate.”
Pairing up with Minnesota’s oldest brewery led to the creation of Hot Tropic, a pilsner featuring New Zealand hops that plays to each brewery’s lager strengths.
Jace Marti, brewmaster at Schell’s, brought the brewery’s lager yeast to make it a “true collaboration,” explains Schwandt.
“We’ve only ever used our own house strains, so that was a lot of fun, and hopefully you actually get a little bit of Schell’s flavor in the beer, even though it was brewed at Bauhaus,” Schwandt says.
