Editorial Intern

The Growler Magazine is seeking a motivated intern looking to take their first step into the world of publishing and journalism and who has a genuine interest in the food and drinks scene. The Growler is a monthly print and online publication and events company based in St. Paul dedicated to storytelling that inspires progress in the communities of food and drink, and a celebration of the craft lifestyle.

This paid, 16-hour/week internship at The Growler will give you first-hand experience in several aspects of print and online publishing and will give you the chance to learn from a tight-knit team of industry professionals.

Position/Title: Editorial Intern

Reports to: Associate Editor

Responsibilities:

Your work as an editorial intern would include, but not be limited to: 

  • Supporting editorial staff in all activities leading to publication
  • Copyediting and fact-checking articles
  • Managing The Growler’s online and print events calendar
  • Creating and sending email newsletters
  • Writing articles as assigned
  • Content management on the publication’s website, including creating drafts of print articles for online publication and creating new web accounts for authors
  • Managing phone and email queries from writers and the public 
  • Keeping databases, spreadsheets, and other records up to date
  • Scheduling and attending interviews
  • Supporting editorial team in brainstorming and the ideation of content
  • Deliveries and general errands and other routine administrative tasks
  • Support of the company’s events in varying capacities
  • Shadowing members of the editorial and publishing staff to learn and ask questions about each area of the company

Required Skills 

  • Excellent research and writing skills including
    • Ability to write in a clear, concise, and engaging way for the target audience
    • Excellent understanding of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling 
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Experience in word processing and spreadsheet programs 
  • Completed, or within one year of completing, a degree in English, Journalism, Communications, a related field, or experiential equivalent
  • A genuine interest in the topic areas of the magazine, including craft beer, spirits, wine, cider, food, and arts and culture
  • Team working skills 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines 

Preferred Skills 

  • Experience with Adobe InCopy
  • Knowledge and basic proficiency in WordPress publishing 

Expectations:

  • Work from The Growler’s offices in St. Paul on Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 5pm, though the occasional night and weekend hours may be required
  • Work Growler and Beer Dabbler events and attend events as needed
  • Conduct yourself at all times in an ethical and professional manner. 

Duration: October 2019 through May 2020

Stipend: $800 per month

Photo Intern

This paid, 16-hour/week internship at The Growler will give you first-hand experience in photography for print and online publishing and will give you the chance to learn from a tight-knit team of industry professionals. 

Position/Title: Photo Intern

Reports to: Photo Editor

Responsibilities:

Your work as a photo intern would include, but not be limited to: 

  • Sourcing photos for articles and special projects
  • Processing and creating back-ups of photos from freelancers and staff photographers in our content management system
  • Uploading photos to the magazine’s website and laying out articles for online publication
  • Assisting on photo shoots with the Photo Editor and freelance photographers as needed
  • Taking photos for articles and special projects as assigned
  • Keeping meeting minutes
  • Supporting editorial staff in all activities leading to publication
  • Supporting editorial team in brainstorming and the ideation of content
  • Attending and/or covering events on behalf of the business 
  • Deliveries and general errands and other routine administrative tasks
  • Support of the company’s events in varying capacities
  • Shadowing members of the editorial and publishing staff to learn and ask questions about each area of the company

Required Skills 

  • Completed, or within one year of completing, an AA in Photography, BFA in Photography, BA in Journalism, BA in Mass Media a related field, or experiential equivalent
  • Understanding of common DSLR cameras and lenses, studio strobes and speedlights
  • Basic knowledge of GoPro operation
  • Basic understanding of elements of photography, lighting, and composition
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge
  • Excellent research and writing skills including a strong understanding of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling 
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • A genuine interest in the topic areas of the magazine, including craft beer, spirits, wine, cider, food, and arts and culture
  • Team working skills 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
