If you thought you had a hard time snagging a bottle of this year’s Surly Darkness, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Surly has upped the ante on their most sought-after annual release by creating a barrel-aged version and releasing it in bottles for the first time.
The limited edition barrel-aged Darkness bottles are hitting store shelves today, Nov. 30, but likely won’t stay put there for long. Attendees at this year’s Darkness Day were able to purchase one bottle of the barrel-aged version of this 12% ABV Russian imperial stout.
The beer was aged for three months in High West rye whiskey barrels. According to Surly, the barrel character is very pronounced and comes across as oaky, spicy, and highly aromatic on top of the core Darkness flavors.
