Handsome Hog brings ‘Bourbon and Smoke’ to Lowertown

The tagline for Handsome Hog is “Bourbon and Smoke”, and the new eatery by Carol March (Public Kitchen + Bar) in the former Bin Wine Bar space features plenty of both.

Try the Wisdom of J.J. Hill ($10), a cocktail in which Rittenhouse Rye is smoothed over by a dose of smoked, charred peach—just enough to add some fruit flavor, but nuanced enough to keep it a serious whiskey drink. It’s the work of Trish Gavin (Il Foro, Brasserie Zentral, Heidi’s), who’s pouring solid sazeracs, classic juleps and even bourbon slushies. It will instantly become one of the most compelling cocktail destinations in Lowertown.

The “hog” part of the equation is everywhere on the menu by chef Justin Sutherland (Meritage, Brasserie Zentral). Whole roasted hog jowl, a “meat bar” featuring several versions of cured pork, crispy pig tails, pulled pork sandwiches, etc. But so far, we’re just as enamored with Handsome Hog’s basic Southern accoutrements—pimento cheese spread on Ritz crackers, buttery Anson Mills grits, hushpuppies stuffed with crawfish.

Handsome Hog opens to the public on Monday, March 21. Mayor Coleman will hold a ribbon cutting (and be guest bartending!) on Thursday, March 31.
