Loon Liquors, the Northfield distillery, has brought home a silver medal from the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for MetropoliGin. More than 1,850 spirits were entered this year, in what is considered to be one of the most prestigious spirits competitions in the world.

During our visit to Loon’s cocktail room just before opening last September, we got our first taste of the spirit, noting:

“Metropoligin is less juniper-forward in the style of many new American gins. It has a pleasant floral aroma and earthy spice, but also a distinct sweetness in the mid-palate, much like a Plymouth gin.”

Distiller Simeon Rossi described MetropoliGin to us:

“It’s not heavy-handed, but the juniper definitely exists. I think it’s just well-balanced, more floral, softer. It has coriander, cardamom, juniper, rose petals, lemon and grapefruit peel, angelica root, orris root, and rosemary, so, a fairly traditional botanical blend.”

MetropoliGin is available at the Loon Liquors cocktail room, and select retail locations. Organizers will post the full results from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition on their website on April 4.
