August Schell Brewing Company announced this morning they’ve completed the purchase of the historic Grain Belt sign on Nicollet Island.
Plans call to add the sign to the National Register of Historic Places and have it fully restored and relit by the summer of 2017 (the sign was last lit in 1975.) Schell’s is partnering on the project with local historical consultants Hess, Roise and Company, who previously worked on the restoration of the old Grain Belt Brewery in Northeast Minneapolis.

In celebration of the purchase, Schell’s will release a new beer under the Grain Belt label—Lock & Dam, a crisp, copper lager. The new beer will be in kegs and bottles (six- and twelve-packs) in April, with 16-ounce cans coming later this summer.
