University of Minnesota professor and author Julie Schumacher became the first woman to win the Thurber Prize for American Humor on Monday for her novel “Dear Committee Members”

St. Paul writer Julie Schumacher was the first woman to win the Thurber Prize for American Humor on Monday, September 28. The award has been around for 18 years; past winners include Jon Stewart, Ian Frazier, and David Sedaris.

Schumacher, a University of Minnesota professor, won the award for her novel “Dear Committee Members.” The book is a series of letters written by a beleaguered professor who is tasked with writing letters of recommendation for “mediocre students, terrible students, students he barely knows.”
