Zach Parise votes “None of the above” for new UND nickname

Voting will take place Monday, October 19, through 11:59pm Friday, October 23, to choose a new nickname for the University of North Dakota

Voting will take place Monday, October 19, through 11:59pm Friday, October 23, to choose a new nickname for the University of North Dakota.

Former Fighting Sioux hockey star and current Minnesota Wild forward Zach Parise told Star Tribune that of the new University of North Dakota nicknames up for a vote this week, none pass the test.

Since “Fighting Sioux” was stripped from UND in 2012 after being deemed offensive by the NCAA, five new nicknames have emerged to take its place: Fighting Hawks, Nodaks, North Stars, Roughriders, and Sundogs.

Students, alumni, university faculty and staff, donors, and season-ticket holders have until Friday, October 23, at 11:59 p.m. CDT, to cast their votes for the new name.
