Paul Berglund, chef at The Bachelor Farmer in the North Loop of Minneapolis, was honored last night with the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Midwest. Berglund (pictured, left, attending our recent brisket dinner) is the first Minneapolis chef to bring home the award with Isaac Becker (112 Eatery) in 2011.

It was the first win after three nominations for Berglund. Lenny Russo (Heartland Restaurant) was also nominated for the award.

In the past year, Berglund has presided over the expansion of the restaurant into a new, neighboring cafe. He’s also a board member of the Minnesota Sustainable Farming Association.

Listen to Berglund and Bachelor Farmer owner Eric Dayton discuss “The North” and the direction of Minnesota cuisine in Season 1, Episode 1 of the fine local podcast The Weekend Starts Now.
