Schell’s Chimney Sweep Debut

On Tuesday, November 14 Mayslack’s Bar in Northeast Minneapolis was host to the release of Schell’s Brewing Company‘s newest beer: Chimney Sweep Black Lager.  Brewmaster Jace Marti explained that the inspiration for the new beer comes from the time he recently spent in Germany, specifically Upper Franconia, as he combines three different styles of lager popular to the region.  Marti integrated characteristics from a Dunkel, a Schwartz, and a Rauch so that Chimney Sweep displays the dark color, flavor, and clean finish of a lager but also has a light smoky taste and aroma typical of the Rauch.  The smokiness is not overpowering but creates a pleasant, subtle dimension to the beer.

The release party featured four of Schell’s other beers, each paired with a small plate item.  The Fresh Hop Citra Pils was paired with walleye, the Snowstorm with a cornbread bbq pork slider, the FireBrick with thin crust pizza, and the Emerald Rye with wonderfully spiced chicken wings.  As the finale, the Chimney Sweep itself was served with roasted pork loin with spiced apples.

At the time of this post you can only find Chimney Sweep in Minnesota, but they will be distributing to 7 other states in the coming weeks.  Chimney Sweep will be available November through March.
