Update: Ryan Reschan (one of the winning homebrewers) posted a youtube review of Arrogant Bastard and gave it a “D,” criticizing the beer’s labeling because the description is “insulting” to the reader. He also poked fun at Stone’s CEO Greg Kock. Mind you, this is only a week after Reschan got to brew his contest-winning IPA with Kock and the rest of Stone. Of course, Stone’s marketing should be taken light-heartedly. And likewise, it turns out the whole thing is a stunt.
Earlier this year, Stone Brewing Co. held its 2013 Homebrew Competition at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Escondido, CA. Thirty participants submitted home brews with hopes of winning the opportunity to have their recipe professionally brewed at Stone and distributed across the US. The winning brew, made by Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan, won over a panel of judges consisting of Stone CEO & Co-founder Greg Koch, President & Co-founder Steve Wagner, Brewmaster Mitch Steele, and several other stone brewers.
Masterson and Reschan’s winning hombrewed Coconut IPA won because it was “creative and amazingly tasty” according to the judges. To achieve the same delicious result on a full-fledged production scale, Rip Current Brewing Co. lent their expertise and pilot system to dial in a recipe that satisfied everyone involved.
Ultimately, six hop varieties were used to attain the bright flavors of tropical fruit that the homebrew version originally delivered. It was also brewed with 208 pounds of lightly-toasted coconut, Overall, Robert Masterson & Ryan Reschan / Rip Current / Stone R&R Coconut IPA is the perfect beer to enjoy in the summer sun, providing a refreshing balance of coconut and tropical fruit with a smooth, dry, hoppy, bitter finish. The beer should be enjoyed before the, well, “Enjoy By” date on the bottle to maximize the coconut and hop aromas and flavors.
