Surly Brewing’s Rising North Pale Ale the official beer of Minnesota United FC

So long United Crushers. Hello Rising North. The beer brewed by Surly Brewing to kick off Minnesota United FC‘s inaugural MLS season was revamped as Rising North Pale Ale and named the official beer of the soccer team on Wednesday, April 19.

United Crushers Pale Ale debuted at the first pre-match party at Surly Brewing and was made available at TCF Bank Stadium, Surly’s Beer Hall, and some neighborhood soccer bars. The name was a nod to the iconic United Crushers tag that adorns a Prospect Park grain elevator. Some of the United Crushers artists raised concerns over the brewery using the United Crushers painting to market the beer, though it’s unclear if that factored into the decision to rebrand the pale ale.

While the name has changed to Rising North, the beer has largely remained the same: it’s a traditional pale ale that clocks in 5.4% ABV and is dry hopped with Chinook, Eureka, and Mandarina Bavaria hops.

“Surly is a fantastic local brewery with a long track record of creativity and collaboration when it comes to beer making,” said MNUFC President Nick Rogers in the press release. “We’re proud that they’re honoring our arrival in MLS with Rising North and thrilled to be offering it at home matches throughout the season.”

“Honestly, we were just thrilled to have Major League Soccer in Minnesota,” also said Surly Brewing owner Omar Ansari in the press release. “Being able to partner with MNUFC on the official beer for the team and its fans is icing on the cake.”

Rising North is available on draft starting today, and will be available in four-packs of 16-ounce cans this June.
