Plate of the Week: Union Kitchen’s ‘w/Purple Sticky Rice’

w/Purple Sticky Rice by Union Kitchen at The Bird Rocks // Photo by John Garland, The Growler

First, the colors. A massive mound of purple sticky rice. On either side, cups of red Tiger Bite sauce and green scallion sauce. An orange tangle of carrot and daikon dressed in vinegar. Then, grilled sausage in small patties and meat on a skewer.

Next, ditch your silverware—grab at it, swipe some meat, pinch some rice, drizzle some sauce, lick your fingers.

The first of this summer’s pop-ups from Chris Her and Yia Vang’s Union Kitchen happened at The Bird last Friday. “w/Purple Sticky Rice” is a great example of what they’re hoping to represent of Hmong food—drawing on a diverse set of flavors and influences, making it both interactive and comforting.

Last week, it was yakitori chicken hearts on the skewer. This week, the chicken will be sweet and sour. We’re excited to watch the menu evolve over the full summer series.

This Friday, June 23, you can eat “w/Purple Sticky Rice” and other delicious things (menu, below) at Colossal Cafe on Como Avenue. Next Friday, June 30, they’ll be back at The Bird on Loring Park. Both pop-ups go from 5-9pm, no tickets, no reservations.

This is our Pop-Up menu this Friday (June 23rd) at Colossal Cafe (2315 Como Ave St. Paul)

Open from 5pm-9pm

The Growler presents Pha Khao: A Lao Pop-Up

Growler_LaoPopUp_1000x1000_122116B

Update: Due to overwhelming demand, two additional seatings have been added on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6:00pm and 8:30pm. Buy tickets here.

In our January issue, we’ve been learning about Lao food with Ann Ahmed of Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine and Christina Tia of House of X Tia, and we thought our readers might enjoy a chance to do the same.

So The Growler presents Pha Khao: a Lao Pop-Uptaking place Thursday, January 19, (sold out) and Friday, January 20 at MidCity Kitchen, 693 Raymond Ave, St Paul. There will be two seatings for dinner, at 6pm and 8:30pm. Tickets are $65 (alcohol included) plus a small service charge.

Here’s the deal: You’ll sit down (yes, on the floor!) for a three-course Lao feast, including a welcome cocktail and drink pairings with each course. You’ll chat with Ann and Christina, test your mettle with some spicy jeow, and swig some Lao rice lager with other local food lovers. It’s meant to be an intimate, family style meal, and it’s not a huge room, so get your tickets now!

Hungry yet? Check out the menu.
