With over 150 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. Visit every Friday for the latest or sign up for a weekly email.

Blueberries, barrels, ESB, and lots of stouts. Those are just a few of the many flavors in a diverse week of new beers this week across the state. Fulton and Bad Weather are throwing annual parties in the Twin Cities, and Bent Paddle’s Festiversary is back and bigger than ever in their new across-the-street brewery home.

For those who seek a quieter setting, there are ample new releases from the likes of Barrel Theory, Pryes, Dangerous Man, Junkyard, and many more.



Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Fulton Brewing Cosmic Stallion

On Saturday, May 12, Fulton will lead a team of cyclists across the metro for the Gran Fondo. At tonight’s pre-party feast, they’ll introduce a beer named after an All-City Cycles bike. The Cosmic Stallion is “a classic wheat ale highlighted by a burst of citrus and punctuated by Fulton’s signature style of Midwestern approachability,” Fulton says.

Summit Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Badge Chaser

Available only at St. Paul’s Dark Horse Bar & Eatery, and tapped in limited supply on Wednesday, May 9, this brown ale in rye whiskey barrels has “hints of caramel, dark fruit, chocolate, maybe a little espresso, and a dash of hop spice,” Summit says.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company Blue Milk

On tap at Dangerous Man’s “May the Fourth Be With You” party, on of course, May 4, Blue Milk is a session brewed with oats, wheat, biscuit malt, and lactose, then aged on blueberries, pineapples, guava, and vanilla beans. As of May 8, “We have about 100 crowlers of Blue Milk left if you didn’t get any, and a very limited amount still on tap,” the brewery said on Facebook.

Steel Toe Sommer Vice

The return of hefeweizens is the true harbinger of spring and summer. The color of “a field of straw on a sunny day,” Steel Toe’s Bavarian-style hefeweizen is back on tap. This seasonal, 5% ABV sipper tantalizes the palate with aromas of baked bread, as well as the traditional banana, clove, and lemony citrus notes.

Insight Brewing Company Whisker Licker Pineapple Mango Lager

With sunny days on the brain, Insight Brewing is ready with a summer collaboration beer with Betty Danger’s. Whisker Licker Pineapple Mango Lager, an exclusive pineapple mango lager now on tap at Psycho Suzi’s, Betty Danger’s, and Mr. Steven’s Snuggery.

  • Farmhouse – Wallonian blend

12welve Eyes Brewing

  • Blueberry Milkshake IPA – The latest in 12welve Eyes’ ongoing milkshake IPA series, the brewery describes as “a traditional Milkshake IPA with Citra and Mosaic hops along with wheat, oats, and lactose for an extra creamy, shake-like mouthfeel and then jam-packed with blueberry puree.”
  • Cataracts: Idaho 7 – Tapped today, “Next up in our Hazy IPA Cataracts series is Cataracts: Idaho 7. Brewed with Idaho 7 hops for big citrus and tropical fruit notes, this is a fruit and haze bomb you won’t want to miss,” says the brewery.

Alloy Brewing Company

  • Cherry Lime Wit – This beer “combines a gentle blend of lime and cherry with a light, crisp taste,” Alloy says.

Angry Inch Brewing

  • Hobo’s Haze – A hazy-style IPA made with experimental hops. 6.5% ABV, 35 IBU.

Back Channel Brewing

  • Sole Purpose – A red ale, tapped last week. 6.25% ABV, 36 IBU.

Bad Habit Brewing

  • Golden Ale – A 4% ABV golden ale with notes of biscuit cracks and a touch of sweetness, the brewery says.

Bad Weather Brewing Company

Three new beers will be featured at Bad Weather’s outdoor arcade party from May 11–13:

  • Fog of War – Bad Weather’s first hazy IPA.
  • Munich Helles – A traditionally decocted Bavarian lager.
  • Passionfruit Anomaly – The next release in the kettle sour Anomaly series features passionfruit and will be on tap this weekend. It comes to cans next month.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

  • Husker Dus & Husker Don’ts – A new pale ale made with Galaxy and Mosaic hops.

Big Axe Brewing Company

  • Mango Milkshake IPA – To be tapped this Saturday, Nisswa’s Big Axe says this one is “smooth with a nice mango flavor that lingers on the taste buds. Balanced with tropical hops. Ends with a slight bit of sweetness.”

Blue Wolf Brewing

  • Lone Wolf – “This beer is in a style on its own. Malty, slightly hoppy, and notes of roasted barley work throughout this beer,” the brewery says of this 4.5% ABV, 28 IBU beer.

Cuyuna Brewing Company

  • The Wild Goat – Wild rice bock

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Blue Milk –Top Flight selection.
  • Dark Raspberry Tart – Dangerous Man describes this beer as having Tootsie Pop notes, plus tart raspberry. 6.7% ABV, 20 IBU.

Disgruntled Brewing

  • Wee Sinister – Described as “Menace’s little sister,” this dark and malty dry stout features notes of coffee and chocolate. 5.0 ABV, 49 IBU.

Dual Citizen Brewing Company

  • Dewey – A tart cherry kettle sour, on tap now. 4% ABV.
  • Ford Belgian Golden Ale – 7.5% ABV

Earth Rider Brewery

  • North Tower Coffee Stout – North Tower oatmeal stout was just awarded a bronze medal at the 2018 World Beer Cup this past week. At 5pm today Earth Rider unveils a new version made with Duluth Coffee Company coffee to complement the beer’s chocolate and roasty flavors.

ENKI Brewing

  • Idyll ESB – Tapped this Tuesday.


  • Buddy Stout – 5.8% ABV and available at the taproom.
  • Dead Irish Poet Extra Stout – 7.0% ABV and available at the taproom.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company

  • UnderCurrants – A new currant-infused wild ale from the Barrelworks series, using a base of Agrestic Ale and inoculated with Brettanomyces yeast.

Fulton Brewing

  • Cosmic Stallion –Top Flight selection

Giesenbräu Bier Co.

  • Bowcaster – Wookiee Series #3 is a 6.4% ABV Bamberg-style rauchbier.

HeadFlyer Brewing

  • ¡Golden Cinco! – Released last Saturday (Cinco de Mayo), this take on HeadFlyer’s golden ale includes serrano pepper, pineapple, coconut, and lactose for added body.

Hoops Brewing Company

  • Wood Smoked Hefeweizen #99 – “This beer marries the aroma of beechwood with the flavors of clove and banana,” the brewery says. 5.7% ABV, 11 IBU.

Insight Brewing Company

  • Whisker Licker Pineapple Mango Lager – Top Flight selection

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Clearly Obscure – “This New England-style double IPA was brewed with Galaxy, Mosaic and Centennial hops to give the beer juicy flavors of passion fruit, berries and citrus,” the brewery says. “Hazy body and dank bitterness.”
  • Farmhouse-style Blueberry Experimental Sour – Available at the brewery.
  • Galactic Peach Shake-O-Matic IPA – A milkshake-style IPA with peach. Also available in Crowlers.
  • New Zealand Pils – Available at the brewery.
  • Vienna Lager

Lake Superior Brewing

Lake Superior Brewing released new cans to the market this week.

  • Mesabi Red – This is an American red ale with five malts and three hops blended for a malt-forward ale at 6.5% ABV, 19 IBU.
  • Kayak Kölsch – Available in cans now.
  • North Shore Wheat – This is a German-style hefeweizen with “subtle spicy clove-nutmeg essence along with pear-banana fruitiness,” the brewery says. 5.5% ABV, 6 IBU.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • ComoSapien IPA – A Lupulin exclusive for Spring Cafe at Como Lake Pavillion. “It’ll be very food-friendly with a nicely balanced hop (almost pineapple) character. I think it’ll be a hit with some tacos on the Spring Cafe patio this summer,” says restaurateur Matty O’Reilly. The IPA releases at the parkside restaurant tonight.
  • Maibock – A new 7.2% ABV, 35 IBU Heller bock.

Mankato Brewery

  • DNA Apple Ale – “Combining the subtle tartness of apples with biscuity malt,” the brewery says. 4.5% ABV, 10 IBU.

Modist Brewing Co.

  • Shook Strawberry – A lactose IPA brewed with vanilla bean, hops, and “tons” of strawberries. In stores now.

OMNI Brewing Co.

  • Tropical Milkshake IPA

Oswald Brewing Company

  • Hel-a-peno Smoked Chipotle Jalapeno Ale – Released last Saturday for Cinco de Mayo.

Pryes Brewing Co.

  • Bohemian Blonde infusions – Tapping at 2pm this Sunday at the brewery, infusions of passion fruit, apricot, blueberry, and a nitro variation of the Bohemian Blonde.
  • Bourbon Oaked Vanilla Bean Russian Imperial Stout – This special firkin will be available on Saturday afternoon at the brewery.
  • Northern Pale Ale infused with Passion Fruit – Tapped this Wednesday.

Reads Landing Brewing Co.

  • Day Marker – A Northeast-style IPA made with Chinook, Citra, Amarillo and Denali hops. 6.9% ABV, 51 IBUs.
  • Simcoe Smash – “Mild Pale Ale malt is the single grain used in this brew. The Simcoe hops give an fruity, earthy pine flavor with a medium to strong hoppiness,” the brewery says of this SMaSH recipe. 5.6% ABV, 58 UBI.

Rogue Ale & Spirits

  • 10 Hop IPA – Using Keven and Adair hops grown on Rogue Farms, this IPA has a tropical bouquet and notes of pine, the brewery says.

Summit Brewing Company

  • Barrel-Aged Badge Chaser –Top Flight selection

Surly Brewing Company

  • Battle Vest – “This Northern take on the IPA is juicy, tropical, and needs zero dry cleaning,” says Surly. Available at the Beer Hall only.
  • Gruit with grapefruit and orange – A Beer Hall-only option for Infusion Tuesday, May 8.
  • Purple +1 – A Beer Hall-only Cask Saturday release on May 12. This is the First Avenue +1 golden ale, served purple.

Tilion Brewing Company

  • Helios – American Honey Wheat, on tap now.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

  • Waveform – A new West Coast IPA available from the brewery and also sold in cans.

Urban Forage Winery and Cider House

  • Hopped Cider – Now on tap on East Lake Street.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Grapefruit IPA – “Grapefruit from hops, grapefruit from grapefruit,” says Venn. 6.7% ABV, 65 IBU.
  • Mackinac Pale Ale – Showcasing the Mackinac hop, this single hopped pale ale is light with a grapefruit pith, the brewery says. 5.4% ABV, 40 IVU.
  • Mosaic Mandarina IPA – Notes of cantaloupe, papaya, and mandarin oranges define this 7.7% ABV, 65 IBU IPA.
  • Simcoe Keller Pils – 5.5% ABV, 40 IBU.

Wicked Wort Brewing Company

  • Space Drank Tangerine Kettle Sour – 5.5% ABV, 18 IBU

  • Hopper Trail – An American IPA at 6.8% ABV, 96 IBU and coming soon.
  • Summer Suds – A summer Kölsch-style ale at 4.8% ABV, 18 IBU.

Eastlake Craft Brewery

  • Arcturan Mega-Saison – This spring saison is back on tap and in 750-milliliter bottles. The beer features ginger and grapefruit and pours at 10% ABV.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • Keep the North Cold – Keep the North Cold features the deep-rooted, perennial grain Kernza and was made in an awareness campaign with Askov Finlayson. The beer itself is an easy-drinking golden ale that is mildly sweet with earthy notes. A portion of the proceeds from this beer’s sales will go to nonprofit efforts to research Kernza. The beer’s return will be marked with a launch party in Fair State’s taproom on Saturday, May 12. 5.0% ABV, 20 IBU.

Klockow Brewing Company

  • Double Downwind – “We took our smoked chocolate stout, doubled the recipe, and let it age in bourbon barrels until it was just right. It is hailing in at 11.6% ABV,” the brewery explains of their first 750-milliliter bottle release.
  • Travelin’ Jack – West Coast-style IPA.

  • Saison Aux Baies Ameres – A summer saison made with chokecherry. 6.8% ABV.

  • Saison Rosé – In Ommegang’s words: “A blend of saisons, one aged on oak, the other brewed with hibiscus flowers and co-fermented with chardonnay grape juice, Saison Rosé is fruity, tart, dry, and incredibly quaffable.” 7.7% ABV and available in 12-ounce 4-packs.

Copper Trail Brewing Company

  • Lucky Red – A red ale with sweet and toasted caramel notes along with bready flavors. 5.8% ABV, 20 IBU.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • BA Imperial Pumpkin Ale – This big fall beer was recently moved to rum barrels and is set for release near Halloween.

Duluth Brewhouse

In a unique workaround of Minnesota brewpub laws, Fitger’s recipes will soon be canned and released by Bold Brewing under the Duluth Brewhouse label. The new brewery is owned by Beau Raymond, son of Fitger’s owner Rod Raymond. The new cans debut on June 1.

Garphish Brewing Company

Garphish will open later this month in Bethel with the following lineup:

  • 5-7-5 Apricot Wheat – An American-style wheat ale with apricot puree.
  • bOATlaunch Oatmeal Stout
  • Hapjazardly – A Kölsch-style beer augmented with jalapeno peppers.
  • Long Lake IPA – This locally minded IPA will use Citra hops from Mighty Axe Hops and other local hop growers.

Roma Restaurant & Brewery

  • TBD – An unnamed Lift Bridge collaboration is in the words, according to a Roma Facebook post.

Spilled Grain Brewhouse

  • Belly Flop – Listed as “on deck” on the brewery’s website, this Czech-style pilsner will be 5.5% ABV, 38 IBU and available soon.

Stone Brewing

  • White Geist Berliner Weisse – Stone’s European breweries influenced this beer, available in California now and hitting the rest of the US in the fall. Using Calista and Hüll Melon hops, Stone says “the aroma leads with lemon, peach and melon and the unexpectedly bold and pleasantly refreshing tart flavor punches above its ABV weight.” 4.7% ABV, 12 IBU.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Maple Grindcore – A Beer Hall-only espresso stout infused with maple will be available on Tuesday May 15.
  • Peach Cobbler Cynic – The featured beer at Cask Saturday, May 19 at the Beer Hall.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • TBD – An unnamed collaboration with Lupulin was announced on Twitter.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Session IPA – This “on deck” hazy IPA will have prominent grapefruit notes and pour at 4.2% ABV, 42 IBU, the brewery says.
  • Witbier – A Belgian white wheat beer with citrus and spice on the palate. 6.0% ABV, 24 IBU.

Waconia Brewing Company

  • Mo-Winta Milk Stout – Fresh off a 2018 World Beer Cup gold medal, this sweet milk stout will return to the taproom to celebrate on May 18.
