The Mash-Up: Brut and barrel-aged to ring in the New Year

Barrel-aged beers, winter warmers, and Resilience are just a few of the top themes of this holiday week’s beer releases. But, as is typical at the end of the year, more beer news is looking forward at this point, looking to the parties of the year’s end—a day that’s an obvious fit for the newly popular Brut-style of beers—and not just Brut IPAs.

Fair State teamed up with South Dakota-based Fernson for ChamPils (available in Sioux Falls) and Bent Paddle is dropping hints about their own big collaboration news. Speaking of Bent Paddle, the Duluth brewery shared their entire 2019 calendar, detailed below. Double Shot Double Black is back; Wilderness Tuxedo continues to evolve; and much, much more.

Schell’s Bock is back next week, 612 has several beers in the works, and LocAle has two new offerings this week. That and more in this week’s Mash-Up.

Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

612Brew Mill City Pils

“This light, crisp, and refreshing Pilsner that offers a perfect balance between its malt flavor and bitterness is made for the Twin Cities,” the brewery says. It taps this Saturday at the brewery and will be sold year-round, hitting the general market in late January. 4.9% ABV.

Excelsior Woodrift Barrel-Aged Belgian Quad

This quad was made with homemade Belgian rock candi and a malty base before aging for one year in Buffalo Trace barrels. The brewery says it has banana and clove esters with boozy notes of bourbon. Available in 750-milliliter bottles and on tap as of last week. 10.2% ABV.

Clutch Blame It on Brexit

“This strong ale features waves of dark fruit, such as black cherries, plum, and fig, supported by a carmel-y malty backdrop and a light smokey finish,” the brewery says. 6.5% ABV, 21 IBU.

Venn Ridiculous Anniversary Chocolate Cake Imperial Porter

A one-year anniversary imperial porter with biscuit, caramel, toast, and chocolate birthday cake flavors. Big and bold. 10.8% ABV, 30 IBU.

HeadFlyer Raspberry Beret

A wheat ale with raspberry that’s “pale, pink, and hazy,” the brewery says.

  • Resilience Butte County Proud IPA – Tapped last week at the Iowa brewery.

612Brew

  • Don’t Call It A Comeback DDH DIPA – A new double dry-hopped IPA with sauvignon blanc, pear, gooseberry, and grapefruit flavors. The first of a quarterly limited-offer series for 2019, debuting at the brewery on Saturday, December 29. 9.1% ABV.
  • Mill City Pils – Top Flight selection

  • Pilsner – A 6.3% ABV Pilsner made with 100 percent Weyermann Barke Pilsner malt and Hallertau Mittelfrüh.

Canal Park Brewing Company

  • Split Rock Storm Schwarzbier – A dark German-style lager with medium hop bitterness, sweet maltiness, and notes of chocolate and lightly roasted coffee, the brewery says.

Clutch Brewing Co.

  • Blame It on Brexit – Top Flight selection

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Centennial Cryo IPA – A 7.2% ABV, 65 IBU IPA with resinous and melon flavors from its hop-forward profile.

Excelsior Brewing

  • Woodrift Barrel-Aged Belgian Quad – Top Flight selection

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • Double Spirit Føul – A double IPA version of this hazy IPA released at the taproom on Thursday, December 27.

Fernson Brewing Company

  • ChamPils – This is a Brut Pilsner brewed at the Sioux Falls brewery in collaboration with Minneapolis’ Fair State. It debuts today on draft at the brewery and also in 750-milliliter bottles, just in time for the new year.
  • Seed Series #028 Citra IPA – A Citra dry-hopped hazy IPA that tapped at the brewery on December 19 in limited supply.

Half Brothers Brewing Company

  • Resilience Butte County Proud IPA – On tap now in Grand Forks. 6.8% ABV, 70 IBU.

HeadFlyer Brewing

  • Raspberry Beret – Top Flight selection
  • Stranger in the Alps – An amber-colored lager with a smooth malty finish, the brewery says.

Inbound BrewCo

  • Resilience Butte County Proud IPA – Tapped this Wednesday at the brewery.
  • Wild Rice Porter With Cherry & Vanilla – An infusion wild rice porter that debuted last Friday.

Invictus Brewing Co.

  • Out of the Night – A rye stout with notes of graham cracker, rye spiciness, and chocolate.  7.2% ABV, 40 IBU.

Klockow Brewing Company

  • Upwind – An Irish blonde ale. 5.6% ABV.

LocAle Brewing Co.

  • 1st Born – A Belgian saison with Maltwerks malt and Mighty Axe hops. 5.5% ABV, 25 IBU.
  • Deep Valley – “A warming, nearly sessionable oatmeal stout. A small batch variant with cold-pressed coffee from Mankato’s Beans Coffee Company will also be on tap for a limited time,” the brewery says. 4.5% ABV, 20 IBU.

Shakopee Brewhall

  • Barrel-Aged Prairieville Winter Warmer  – This version of Prairieville spent one year in a Jim Beam bourbon barrel.

Spiral Brewing

  • Marley Barleywine – A barleywine with toasty and caramel, rum-like aromas, plus notes of rich toffee, dates and plums. It pours a deep amber in color at 9.7% ABV.
  • Toboggan Club Dunkelweizen – A brown-in-color wheat beer that Spiral describes as “liquid chocolate banana bread” with the sweet clove notes of a hefeweizen and the roastiness of a dark German ale.

Starry Eyed Brewing Co.

  • Wee Walker – Starry Eyed’s Scottish Wee Heavy, aged on oak and Johnny Walker Red. Sold at the brewery, including in limited bottles. 10.5% ABV.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

  • Resilience Butte County Proud IPA – Tapped at the brewery this week.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • St. Nick’s Imperial Red Ale – 8.4% ABV, 37 IBU.

Urban Forage Winery & Cider House

  • Winter Spice Cider – Served hot or cold at the cidery, Winter Spice offers cinnamon, clove, ginger, and cardamom in a honey-sweetened cider. 6% ABV.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Belgian Blonde – A Belgian-style blonde ale with fruity and spicy character. 6.5% ABV, 30 IBU.
  • Ridiculous Anniversary Chocolate Cake Imperial Porter – Top Flight selection

Wicked Wort Brewing Company

  • Dude-Bro Blood Orange Lime Light Lager – “Light and crisp with slight notes of organic blood orange puree along with fresh lime zest,” the brewery says. 4.4% ABV, 16 IBU.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • No Footing – A tart, hop-forward sour pale ale with a lemon bouquet and notes of grapefruit and peach.

Wooden Hill Brewing Company

  • Crooked Step – A malt-forward winter warmer, also available in 750-milliliter bottles. 10% ABV.

  • Coconut Milk Stout – A rich, silky stout with toasted coconut flakes added for extra body and flavor.

  • Unrated Rye IPA – Now sold in 12-packs.

Bobtown Brewhouse

  • Old Wise – The brown ale returned to taplines last week.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Jack Daniels Barrel-Aged Kollusion – A limited supply of the Belgian Brouwerij Maenhout Collaboration Russian Imperial Stout Kollusion, which was aged in Tennessee whiskey barrels, debuted a week ago. “Hints of chocolate and coffee (sourced from Dunn Brothers North Loop in Minneapolis) pair perfectly with the unmistakable flavor of Tennessee Whiskey. Its smoothness belies the 11.2% ABV,” the brewery says.

Forager Brewery

  • Cherry Darlin’ – A bottle-conditioned red ale that was released in limited supply on December 20.

Klockow Brewing Company

  • Barrel Aged Ryetasca – This barrel-aged roggenbier has vanilla and toffee notes, plus extra layers of complexity from aging in Angel’s Envy and Templeton Rye barrels. 7% ABV.
  • Travelin’ Jack – A West Coast-style IPA made with Citra, Mosaic, and Cascade hops. 6.2% ABV.

Sisyphus Brewing

  • AntiSocial Apple Ale – A graf beer available at the brewery, formerly known as Ms. Sisyphus.
  • Peanut Butter Jackpot – This peanut buttery beer is out in cans at select Minneapolis liquor stores now. 7% ABV, 55 IBU.

u4ic Brewing, Incorporated

  • Henderson Cream Ale – Back on tap, as of last week.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co.

Bent Paddle of Duluth unveiled their 2019 plans this week. Included in the lineup are:

  • Doppelbock – Available in 6-pack cans the week of January 14.
  • Boysenberry Wilderness Tuxedo – This kettle sour will be available in cans in February.
  • Pôrdij Hazy IPA – Back in February in cans.
  • Lollygagger Pale Ale – Coming in cans in March.
  • “Top Secret Collab Brew” – The details are under wraps, but whatever it is, it will be sold in 6-packs of 12-ounce cans next May.
  • Mango/Guava Wilderness Tuxedo – Another variation of this American kettle sour hits cans in June.
  • Paddle Break Blonde – In cans the week of July 14.
  • Raspberry Wilderness Tuxedo – Due next September.
  • Harness Rye IPA – In cans next October.
  • Double Shot Double Black (Barrel Aged) – Returning in 750-milliliter bottles on November 11.

  • Dark Cherry Sour – A dark kettle sour made with Montmorency cherries from Michigan. On tap on January 2.

Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative

  • That Salty Quaker – A new salted-caramel oatmeal stout that debuts on New Year’s Eve.

Inbound BrewCo

  • Barrel Aged Wild Rice Porter – Aged for five months in bourbon barrels, this 8.1% ABV, 31 IBU variation of Wild Rice Porter is rich, nutty, and slightly sweet, the brewery says, plus notes of bourbon from the barreling process. Available on January 3 on draft and in limited bottles.

Rogue Ales & Spirits

  • Batsquatch – The first year-round hazy IPA from Rogue. “Batsquatch features bold tropical aromas, flavors of stone fruit and tangerine, and a fruity citrus-rind finish,” the brewery says. It hits nationwide distribution in March.

Rogue Ales & Spirits

  • Outta Line – A West Coast-style IPA that releases on New Year’s Day, this IPA offers tropical tangerine and mango flavors balanced by malt sweetness, the brewery says.

Schell’s Brewery

  • Bock – Back on shelves next week. The dark amber beer serves a rich, robust malt character with a smooth finish.

Sisyphus Brewing

  • Tilt! Pale Ale – A house beer made for Tilt Pinball Bar. Its release date is yet to be determined.

Town Hall Brewery

Barrel Aged Week won’t come until February, but Town Hall will preview the lineup in a new way this year with the “Showcase of Sippers,” in which the brewery will serve a taste of the base beers featured in this year’s February lineup. The sipper lineup will change weekly based on demand, but always with five available for purchase.

January 2:

  • Cherry Grand Cru – A strong Belgian ale aged on Michigan cherries, which after moving into bourbon barrels becomes Manhattan Reserve.
  • Eye of the Storm – A base honey ale that becomes Eye Wine Red after aging in a red wine barrel.
  • Foolish – A Belgian quad that serves as the base for both Foolish Angel and Foolish Red.
  • Russian Roulette – The imperial stout conditioned on chocolate that becomes Tennessee Dessert. Minus the chocolate, it is also used in Barrel Aged Czar Jack.
  • Twisted Reality – The base barleywine behind Twisted Trace.
  • Manhattan Reserve – The featured bourbon barrel aged beer on tap at the 7 Corners brewery location.
  • Eye Wine Red – The featured wine-barrel aged beer this week.

January 10:

  • Chocolate Citrus Belgian Bruin – A base beer aged on kumquat and Belgian chocolate, which will become Project 3106 after hitting the bourbon barrels.
  • 2014 Vintage Weizenbock – Once this beer hits bourbon barrels it becomes Buffalo Bock.
  • Project 3106 – The featured bourbon barrel aged beer on tap at the 7 Corners brewery location.
  • Eye Wine Red – The featured wine-barrel aged beer this week.

January 17:

  • 6HT – A double milk stout, aged on coconut and served on nitro. It is also available for anniversary week.
  • Wee Heavy – The Scottish wee heavy that becomes E.T.
  • E.T. Wee – The featured bourbon barrel aged beer on tap at the 7 Corners brewery location.
  • Baltic Red – The featured wine-barrel aged beer this week.

January 24:

  • Belgian Crush w/ Blackberries – After aging in bourbon barrels, the finished beer is known as Black Barrel Gold.
  • Jack Frost – The non-chocolate imperial stout that is the base for both Czar Jack and Russian Roulette.
  • Czar Jack – The featured bourbon barrel aged beer on tap at the 7 Corners brewery location.
  • Baltic Red – The featured wine-barrel aged beer this week.
