The Mash-Up: Ladies of beer unite for Women’s Day collaborations

With over 150 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. Visit every Friday for the latest or sign up for a weekly email.

The big story in beer this week comes in the form of collaboration. Yes, there are joint-brewery efforts in various states of fermentation from the likes of Surly, Fair State, Steel Toe, Indeed, and others. But the story to share for March 5–11 relates to International Women’s Day, and how women from across the industry teamed up on new beers that range in style from gose at Inbound BrewCo to sparkling golden ale at Lift Bridge and a dry-hopped tart ale at Surly.

Other notable stories: 56 Brewing made an uber-local beer using local honey and grains, including heritage wheat and a bit of Kernza; Sociable Cider Werks is debuting several meads during the month of March; and Inbound, Wild Mind, and Lakes & Legends are all coming out with new distribution formats for their beers. Styles this week range from bock, gruit, barleywine, saison, and the continuing boom of hazy IPAs.

Inbound Glass Ceiling Gose

Brewed by the women of Inbound back on February 6, this pineapple gose debuted on Thursday for International Women’s Day. “The sour ale is infused with just enough sweet pineapple to remind you there’s light at the end of this long wintry tunnel,” says the brewery. 4.4% ABV, 20 IBU.

This new beer from the Witch Hunt collective was brewed at Surly’s Brooklyn Center facility. A dry-hopped tart ale with 30 pounds of sweet orange peel and 10 pounds of orange zest added to the whirlpool, The Familiar was released on Thursday for International Women’s Day at Surly’s Beer Hall in Minneapolis.

Lupulin 2018 RUS

Just one of many releases during Lupulin Brewing’s Big Beer Week, running from March 4 through March 11, 2018 RUS was tapped on Monday. This Russian imperial stout clocks in at 12% ABV. You can even taste it side by side with the 2017 RUS and a 2015 barrel-aged version.

Sociable Metheglyn-style Mead

March is Mead Madness at Sociable Cider Werks. The cider house and brewery is releasing different styles of the honey-based drink each Friday during the month. This week’s special Friday release is a metheglyn-style mead fermented from wildflower honey with lemongrass, chamomile, and dandelion.

Town Hall Ol’ Blarney Strong Irish Ale

Town Hall is getting a head start on St. Paddy’s Day celebrations with the release of a strong Irish ale, Ol’ Blarney. Known for brewing true-to-style beers, Town Hall’s 6.9% ABV red ale is sure to feature all the caramel sweetness, lightly roasted grain, and medium hop bitterness we love about the style.

  • Northwoods Blonde: Brewers Edition
  • Triple IPA

  • Apricot infused Citrus Chaos – The first of a weekly limited Citrus Chaos infusion series running through the month of March. 5.7% ABV. Available on March 8.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

  • Swipe Right – An imperial stout that features Bootstrap Coffee and vanilla. 10.5% ABV.

Bent Paddle Brewing Company

  • Pôrdij Imperial Pale Ale – Described as juicy and super dank, this dry-hopped pale ale registers 70 IBU.

Broken Clock Brewing

  • Constitution Cream Ale – Making its debut at the brewery this weekend, where Broken Clock will be selling pints. “Light, crisp, and mildly malty beer with a smooth mouthfeel. Very low bitterness,” the brewery says. 5% ABV, 20 IBU.

Day Block Brewing Company

  • Feelin’ Fresh Kolsch – March’s monthly Small Batch release.
  • Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout – Day Block celebrates their fourth anniversary with this 11.2% ABV imperial stout. The rye and bourbon barrel aging process “brings out a fantastic aroma of fresh dates, vanilla and chocolate,” the brewpub says. Also available in limited 750-milliliter bottles.

ENKI Brewing

  • Cloud Burst – A New England-style IPA, tapped last Friday.

HammerHeart Brewing Company

  • Mani – Coming to bottles on Saturday, this is a smoked chocolate stout with cherries, aged on vanilla in cherrywood smoked bourbon barrels. Bottle sales start at 1:30pm with regular pours at 2pm.
  • Sol – Also releasing on Saturday, this is a smoked chocolate stout with cherries.

Imminent Brewing

  • Winter Blues – An American wheat ale made with local blueberries.

Inbound BrewCo

  • Glass Ceiling Gose – Top Flight selection

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Orange Shake-O-Matic IPA – A brand new Shake-O-Matic available at the brewery and in Crowlers. 7.1% ABV, 45 IBU.
  • Silverback – Vanilla porter on nitro at the brewery.

Lakes & Legends Brewing Company

  • Big Louise – The latest in Lakes & Legends’ Farm Series, this is a Belgian dubbel with Minnesota-grown barley. “A nice Belgian dubbel with all the familiar notes: plums, muscovado sugar and banana are all nicely represented here,” the brewery says. 8.3% ABV, 34 IBU.

Lakeville Brewing Co.

  • Positive Vibes Pilsner – Czech pilsner, 5.5% ABV, 35 IBU.

Loony’s Brew

  • Sasquatch – A complex gruit that uses 34 different herbs and spices—and no hops. 6.0% ABV, 9 SRM. Released March 1.

Lupulin Brewing Company

Lupulin is releasing 10 beers from March 4–11, dubbed Big Beer Week. Releases include:

  • 2017 Barrel God
  • 2018 RUS – Top Flight selection
  • Belgian Tripel – A Beerploma collaboration, Lupuin says, “This is a traditional Belgian-style tripel fermented with orange blossom honey.”
  • 2015 RUS Barrel-Aged – In limited supply.

  • 2016 Barrel God Wild Turkey – In limited supply.

  • Strange Illusion – An imperial stout dry-hopped with Simcoe is being distributed within Lupulin’s market. 9% ABV, 75 IBU, 60 SRM.

LynLake Brewery

  • Aww Jeez – Now on tap, this raspberry kettle sour pours at 5% ABV, 40 IBU, 7 SRM.

Modist Brewing Co.

  • Shook Pineapple Milkshake IPA – Modist uses real pineapple, milk sugar, vanilla bean, and Denali hops in this limited hazy IPA that’s available at the brewery and in select stores.

Pryes Brewing Co.

  • Azacca Pale Ale Flavored Flight – Starting at 2pm this Sunday, Pryes will sell pints and flights of three infusions of their Azacca Pale Ale featuring lemon, watermelon, and wild berry.

Reads Landing Brewing Co.

  • Blackleg Porter – A black Dulce de Leche porter: “Caramelized condensed milk creates a hint of sweetness rounded out with coffee and chocolate malts. Served on nitro for a creamy mouth feel. Rich, dark and satisfying,” the brewery says. 5% ABV, 25 IBU.
  • Grumpy Old Dunkel – A one-off beer made for Grumpy Old Men Festival last month in nearby Wabasha. Reads Landing says this one is “brown and murky in color with clove and fruity banana characters palate forward.” 4.9% ABV, 16 IBU.

Shakopee Brewhall

  • Eventide – “A dark saison…With hints of dried raisins, bittersweet cocoa, and a mellow spiciness from a hefty dose of rye,” the brewery says. 7.2% ABV, 26 IBU.
  • Morag – Tapped on Tuesday.

Sociable Cider Werks

  • Metheglyn-style Mead – Top Flight selection.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Grindcore – This espresso milk stout “combines intense coffee flavor with the rich, slightly sweet body of a stout.” Available on nitro draft only, starting the week of March 5.
  • Mango Axeman Ale – “The already-intense tropical fruit, berry, and citrus profile of Axe Man gets amplified with a mango addition,” Surly says. Tapping on March 9 with draft only, starting with a release party at Lord Fletcher’s.
  • Tea-Bagged Furious – Coming to the beer hall for Cask Saturday, March 10.
  • The Familiar – Top Flight selection.

Tilion Brewing Company

Tilion celebrates a soft opening in Cannon Falls this Saturday with a grand opening to follow on March 17.

Taps will include:

  • 2 Day Weekend – New England IPA
  • Lake Andrew Uncommon – California Common steam ale
  • Bliss – Dark chocolate oatmeal stout

Tin Whiskers Brewing Co.

  • Irish Cream Stout – New from the Spark Series, this once-limited taproom only beer is available in cans. “We took our Short Circuit Stout and infused it with the traditional flavors of Irish cream, including coffee, chocolate, almond, and vanilla. It’s sweet, but still roasty, rich but still easy to drink, and will not be around long,” the brewery says. 5.8% ABV.
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Lecky Scottish Ale – Lecky-peated Scottish ale infused with peanut butter and raspberries. 5.5% ABV.

u4ic Brewing, Incorporated

  • Cologne “MN” Kolsch
  • Hoof’n Horn Bock Bier – A dark brown bock now on tap in preparation for Saturday’s 2nd Annual Bock Celebration.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • Beware The Weisse of March – Described as “wonderfully tart and crisp,” this small batch kettle sour is available in limited supply.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Dry Hopped Tangerine Tart – “A mimosa-inspired sparkling ale infused with tangerines and dry-hopped with Southern Cross hops from New Zealand,” the brewery says on their website. 5.5% ABV.

Wicked Wort Brewing Company

  • Cherrywood Smoked American Amber Ale – 5.2% ABV, 30 IBU

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • Hot Lips – Wild Mind began limited keg distribution to area bars this week, with the catch that each beer to leave the brewery will be a one-off batch that’s unavailable at the taproom. Hot Lips is a mixed fermentation sour with dragonfruit, passionfruit, vanilla beans, and coconut, aged in oak barrels for 18 months. “Named after the bright pink paint we used in the Barrel Takeout Room, Hot Lips pours as vividly pink as its namesake,” the brewery proclaims.

  • Wiiiiiiiiiiiit – “A traditional witbier with wheat body and an aroma of coriander and orange peel for enhanced complexity,” the brewery says.

Badger Hill Brewing Company

  • Astronaut Brewer Double IPA – A hazy and soft IPA brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy hops.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

  • Dorothy Mantooth

Bauhaus Brew Labs

  • Copperpop – Bauhaus’ hoppy take on an Irish red returns in tall cans. This year’s recipe features a soft malt base with a hop-forward profile that starts with soft citrus and finishes in piney bitterness. 5.6% ABV, 60 IBU.

BlackStack Brewing

  • Thicc Mint – A limited-time thin mint stout. Brewed with 10 boxes of cookies per keg of beer. Tapped on Wednesday.

Hoops Brewing

#13 UK Pale – This British-style pale ale has flavors of cocoa and marshmallow, the brewery says. 5.2% ABV, 18 IBU.

Insight Brewing

  • Splendid Moose – A New England-style pale ale.

Jack Pine Brewery

  • Lemon Shandy – One keg of this summer seasonal made a sneak peak at Jack Pine last weekend. It will return again this summer.

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Bleed Green – Irish stout, now on tap. 4.9% ABV, 23 IBU.
  • Galactic Falconer – New England-style IPA. 6.0% ABV, 38 IBU.

OMNI Brewing Co.

  • Hefeweizen – Hints of banana and clove define this wheat beer, also available in cans.

  • Mirror Universe – Fair State dubs Mirror Universe the “hazy IPA follow-up” to the well-received Spirit Foul.

  • Dry-Hopped American Pale Ale – Brewed on International Women’s Day as a Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day led by Melissa Rainville (Hoops Brewing) and Allyson Rolph (Earth Rider). The dry-hopped pale ale uses a blend of Palisade, Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra, and Loral hops.

  • Clarity of Purpose IPA – Another collaboration for this week’s list, Surly and Fair State came together for this “hazy IPA with no haze.” “Savor the contradiction in this collaboration,” Surly says. It will be available March 21 in the Surly Beer Hall, followed by a Fair State release later.
  • Cut Down – Named in reference to “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash, and connected to its guest brewer, the recently retired Minnesota Twin Glen Perkins. The beer is expected to debut shortly before the Twins home opener on April 3.
  • Galactic Descent – Beer number three in the Intelligent Design series will make its debut on March 14. A New England IPA-inspired recipe by brewer Robbie Denaway,” the brewery described Galactic Descent as “a double dry-hopped dose of Galaxy and Citra hops…with a full universe of juicy, tropical flavor.”
  • Mulled Pentagram – Available in limited supply for Infusion Tuesday, March 13 at the beer hall.
  • Orange Cardamom Bender – Available in limited supply for Cask Saturday on March 17 at the beer hall.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Co.

  • Irish Coffee Tiny Circuit Nitro – Tin Whiskers’ stout infused with coffee from Tiny Footprint and Irish whiskey-soaked oak, served on nitro. To be tapped for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Pecan Pie Lecky Scottish Ale – A limited infusion available on Pi Day, March 14.
  • Schottky Pumpkin Ale – Available in limited supply on Pi Day, March 14.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Blackberry Saison – A dry farmhouse saison with hints of black pepper and blackberry, Venn says. 5.3% ABV.
  • Summer Lager – “Stone fruit, light, clean and dry,” Venn says. “50 percent rice in the mash and a late dose of Amarillo hops in the kettle adds up to a super clean, super dry, super crushable light lager meant for sunny days on the patio, even if the patio’s not open yet.”

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • Abandoned Acre – A coolship farmhouse saison in the works.
