The Mash-Up: Lift Bridge’s Hanszee Hoppy AF IPA pays tribute to a local legend

With over 150 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. Last October, Minnesota said goodbye to a beloved figure in the local craft beer industry: Hans “Hanszee” Lofgren. Hans was a decades-long veteran of the local beer industry, who worked for Capitol Beverage and Original Gravity. A mentor to many, a friend to all, Hans touched the lives of countless people, many of whom shared their memories and thoughts about Hanszee with The Growler.

Now, one year later, Lift Bridge Brewing Company is honoring his memory with the release of a special beer during Hanszee’s birthweek (he preferred to observe the full week rather than just the day) that aims to raise money for one of his favorite nonprofits, Wishes and More, and for an education fund for his children.

True to Hanszee’s love of hoppy beers, Lift Bridge, in partnership with Country Malt Group, created Hanszee Hoppy AF IPA using seven different hops that spell out his nickname: Hallertau Blanc, Amarillo, Northern Brewer, Simcoe, Zeus, and El Dorado (x2).

The launch week kicks off this Sunday from 3–6pm at the Lift Bridge taproom. Lift Bridge will be donating $1 from every beer sold in the taproom and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of shirts and art prints of a special Hanszee-inspired DWITT design.

Nine other launch parties are scheduled throughout the week at Muddy Waters, Brunson’s Pub, The Dubliner Pub & Cafe, MacKenzie Pub, Grumpy’s NE, Tiffany Sports Lounge, Gabe’s By the Park, Half Time Rec, and Stout’s Pub, where there will be more opportunities to donate to Wishes and More and the education fund. Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Boom Island Biere de Garde

A new Farmhouse-style strong pale ale with a toast profile and lingering malty sweet finish. 6.8% ABV, 31 IBU and available in Crowlers starting today.

Earth Rider Cognac Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

Available at 5pm today, this is a Russian imperial stout with notes of dark chocolate and a strong cognac presence, the brewery says. 9.5% ABV, 65 IBU.

Lift Bridge Hanszee Hoppy AF IPA

Named for the late Hans “Hanszee” Lofgren, this IPA was brewed in partnership with Country Malt Group, with seven different hops and is available at the brewery, the nine launch party venues, and a host of other establishments around the Twin Cities. “He always had a cheers and hug with your name on it, so let’s keep toasting to all of the great memories,” says the brewery.

Fair State 1170 Miles

A Mixed Culture collaboration with Jester King that will release on Saturday. It will be released in tandem with a new batch of Saison Drei (see below). 200 bottles will be sold at the brewery.

HammerHeart Draugr

A New England black IPA, to be sold in bottles and on draft as part of HammerHeart’s Dark Gourd celebration this Friday (more info below).

  • Chrono 005 – Black Currant – This new black currant kelly sour pours purple in color and has tart, clean fruit-forward flavors, the brewery says.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co.

  • Old Fashioned 14° ESB – November’s featured infusion at Bent Paddle’s taproom. Also available at select other draft lines this month.

Birch’s on the Lake

  • Vanilla Milk Stout – A rich and creamy stout made with milk sugar and then aged on bourbon vanilla beans. 6.4% ABV.

BlackStack Brewing

  • Face Tats – Released on November 1, this is a double IPA that was double dry-hopped with Vic Secret and El Dorado hops. 8.2% ABV.

Blue Wolf Brewing Co.

  • Monkey Toes (A.K.A. Mr. Cutie) – A 6.3% ABV, 52 IBU American IPA with citrus and pine notes.

Bobbing Bobber Brewing Co.

  • Double Treble – A double IPA pouring at 8% ABV, 81 IBU. Tapped on Halloween.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Biere de Garde – Top Flight selection.

Brew d’État

  • Le Mans Saison – “Our lightest beer yet, basically a grisette that’s been lemon zested halfway to a shandy,” the brewery says.

Chapel Brewing

  • Imperial Stout – Scheduled for draft and bottle release today, November 9 at the brewery, this year’s batch is also barrel-aged. Chapel will have verticals with last year’s version available in flights as well.

Copper Trail Brewing

  • Jim Bunyan – Available next Thursday in cans, this is a maple syrup imperial brown ale pouring at 8% ABV, 28 IBU. “While using locally sourced organic maple syrup, and adding everything Minnesotan for a festive fall brew, please sit back while you enjoy flavors of molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and maple syrup,” the brewery says.

Earth Rider Brewery

  • Cognac Barrel Aged Imperial Stout – Top Flight selection.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • 1170 Miles – Top Flight selection.
  • Chateau Estate Reserve 2018 – Brewed in collaboration with Wild Mind, this mixed fermentation table beer used 100 pounds of fresh Centennial hops (from Mighty Axe), and was naturally conditioned in kegs and bottles. Available this Saturday.
  • From the Rearview – A West Coast IPA with added orange zest. Tapped last Thursday, November 1.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company

  • XXII – Firestone Walker’s 22nd anniversary ale is a blend of Stickee Monkee (Central Coast quad, 44%), Parabola (Russian imperial oatmeal stout, 22%), Bravo (imperial brown ale, 22%) and Helldorado (blonde barleywine, 12%), plus Helldorado aged in rum barrels and gin barrels. It will be sold in special packaging across the country.

Forager Brewery

  • Daydreaming Blend #1 – A bottle-conditioned, mixed culture, oak-fermented saison that Forager describes as having “bright tones of Meyer lemon, and fuzzy peach flesh blend with tones of Chardonnay and a bit of funk.” Limited bottle sales kicked off yesterday, November 11.


  • Blueberry Provincial – A 4.2% ABV blueberry sour ale, available only on draft.
  • Hop Climber Provincial – This is a dry-hopped Belgian-style sour ale, pouring at 4.2% ABV and available at liquor stores.

Great Waters Brewing Company

  • Donald’s Wonder Mild Ale – “Malt flavor dominates this easy drinking, low alcohol English-style mild ale. Subtle floral notes and mild hops bitterness round it out,” the brewery says. 4.3% ABV, 42 IBU.

HammerHeart Brewing Company

With the release of fall seasonal Dark Gourd (info below, under “Seasonals”), HammerHeart will also tap these new beers on tap and in bottles:

  • Draugr – Top Flight selection.
  • Hail to the Pale Gourd – This year’s special Dark Gourd release is going a bit lighter than most HammerHeart recipes with a smoked pumpkin IPA. It will only be available in the taproom, while Draugr will see local distribution.

Invictus Brewing Co.

  • Tyrannosaurus Press – Made with salted caramel chocolate chip, s’more, and oatmeal raisin cookies from T-Rex Cookie & Coffee Cafe and cold brew coffee from Bootstrap Coffee Roasters, the brewery says this pastry stout “pours opaque black with a tan head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, and cookies leads into a silky rich mouthfeel.”
  • Everything in Its Right Place Pale – A new pale ale on tap at the brewery combines several hop varieties. “It pours hazy orange with aromas of tangerine, blueberry, and rose blossoms,” the brewery says. 5.9% ABV, 40 IBU.
  • Mr. Plow Winter Warmer – A deep mahogany beer with a tan head, this beer features aromas of cherry pits, slight leather and molasses, the brewery says. With a malt-forward profile defined by hints of cherry and a clean, dry finish. 7.6% ABV, 45 IBU.

Karst Brewing

  • Company A Centennial Red MN – “This lovely red ale uses locally grown Centennial hops from Civil Sass Hops. The name is a tribute to the local boys of Company A of the 2nd Minnesota [Sharpshooters Company] who were mustered near and then marched past the Civil Sass hop yard to serve the Union during the Civil War,” the brewery says. 6.5% ABV, 21 IBU.

Kona Brewing Company

  • Castaway IPA – One of two new IPAs in the new Hopper Variety Pack, along with Kua Bay IPA, Big Wave Golden Ale, and Longboard Lager. Castaway pours at 6% ABV, 50 IBU.
  • Kua Bay IPA – The second new IPA in the Hopper Variety Pack, Kua Bay is a popular beer at the Oahu and Hawaii brewpubs and is hitting the mainland in this sampler pack. 7.3% ABV, 60 IBU.

Lakeville Brewing Co.

  • Two-Week Hiatus – A 6.8% ABV, 25 IBU American Amber Ale infused with coffee from Idioma Roastery.

Lift Bridge Brewing Company

  • Hanszee Hoppy AF IPA – Named for the late Hans “Hanszee” Lofgren, this IPA was brewed with seven different hops that form an anagram for “Hanszee”: Hallertau Blanc, Amarillo, Northern Brewer, Simcoe, Zeus, and El Dorado (x2). It will be released at the brewery November 11 and at bars across the Cities through the week. 5.75% ABV, 60 IBU.

Little Thistle Brewery

  • StrataGalactica Double IPA – A 7% ABV, 46 IBU double IPA that’s hazy, dank, and resiny, the brewery says, with notes of passion fruit, pineapple, peach, and citrus.

Milk & Honey Ciders

  • Cider of the Woods – The latest in the Deepcuts series, this cider uses English and French bittersweet apples. Aged in bourbon barrels, it offers a touch of sweetness, a dry finish, and notes of raisin, port, and bourbon. 6.9% ABV and out now.

Modist Brewing Company

  • Shook Key Lime Pie – This milk sugar, vanilla bean, graham cracker, cinnamon, and lime beer hit the market last weekend. 7.5% ABV.

Rock Bottom Brewery

  • New Beginnings – A new IPA tapped this Wednesday.

Roundhouse Brewery

  • Empire Builder – “Our Empire Builder is a dark, rich, malty, American-style imperial stout. Hints of stone fruit and currants, with a sweet malty undertone but assertive hoppiness for balance,” the brewery says. 10% ABV, 56 IBU.

Shakopee Brewhall

  • Goat Staredown – A wet hop pale ale with a citrus nose and a smooth, pillowy finish, the brewery says. 5.8% ABV, 43 IBU.

Summit Brewing Company

  • 120 Shilling Export Scotch Ale – Union Series #7, this 9.5% ABV Scottish Ale debuted at the Ratskeller yesterday, and is also available in limited 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles. In defining the new beer, Summit says, “Aromas of toffee, plum pudding, Scotch whisky and baking spice combine with rich flavors of dark fruit and caramel, leading to a long, warming finish.” The brewery recommends drinking it fresh.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Doppelbock – Available exclusively at the Surly Beer Hall, Surly says this malt forward cold weather-minded beer is “Rich with bready sweetness; it also has a complex malt flavor that ends with a dry, warming finish.”

Talking Waters Brewing Company

  • What’s Shakin’ – A milkshake IPA made with lactose, pineapple, mango, and vanilla bean.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

  • Passionfruit Berliner Weisse – Tapped last Friday, this Berliner with passion fruit is Tin Whiskers’ first sour.

Torg Brewery

  • FairSing Ale – Made with English malt and Minnesota wild rice, this is a Minnesotan/British ale with nutty rice notes and mild hops.
  • Well Chuffed – A malt-forward Scottish ale with ints of raisin.

Town Hall Brewery

  • Azacca Strong Pale – Ripe mango, pine, citrus, and pear notes from the Azacca hops set atop a bed of sweet German malt character. 6.4% ABV.
  • Birdsfoot Blonde – A traditional Belgian blonde ale designed to showcase the addition of Birdsfoot honey. 6.8% ABV.

u4ic Brewing, Incorporated

  • Ol’ Pumpkin Gutz Pumpkin Ale – A pumpkin ale that also features anise and cinnamon spices.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • Strawberry Sour Eclipse – A 4.8% ABV, 7 IBU sour ale available at the brewery.

Venn Brewing Company

  • West Coast IPA – A 6.7% ABV, 70 IBU resinous and bitter West Coast-style IPA.

Wooden Hill Brewing Company

  • Double Macro – Pouring at 8.4% ABV, this is an imperial pilsner that the brewery says is “Full bodied with bready malt character, an ideal hop balance, and a crisp finish.”
  • Nom de Plum – A classic-style saison fermented with plum puree. 6.3% ABV.

12welve Eyes

  • Allen RYEverson – “An easy-drinking 5.6% ABV rye stout with flavors of roasted malt and rye spice,” the brewery notes.

21st Amendment Brewery

  • Tasty IPA – Previously a limited edition release, Tasty is back in production through March. It’s a 6.8% ABV IPA with hoppy notes of tropical stone fruit, pine, and a hint of spiciness.

AEGIR Brewing Co.

  • Allfathers Porter – Back on tap soon, likely this weekend, the brewery says.

Bald Man Brewing

  • Black Velvet Milk Stout – With a smooth mouthfeel and slight sweetness, this milk stout is back at the Eagan brewery on nitro.

  • Tip Up Winter Ale – Made with Mighty Axe supplied hops this year.

  • Winter IPA – This seasonal IPA was tapped at the brewery last weekend.

  • Black Chocolate Stout – A 10% ABV Russian imperial stout.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • Giantsbane – This double stout is described by Fair State as “Black, roasty, and hefty. Little bitter, little sweet.”
  • Saison Drei – A brett saison making its return this Saturday.

Forager Brewery

  • Pudding Goggles – A one-off batch of Pudding Goggles was brewed with chocolate cake doughnuts from Rochester’s Drift Dough. The resulting beer debuted on November 8.
  • Regal Hops – A Citra-hopped hazy and juicy double IPA, in Crowlers Thursday, November 8.
  • Tiki Killers – Also available in Crowlers, this is an American sour ale fermented with dragon fruit, passion fruit, guava, and mango.

Fulton Brewing

  • Double Dry Hopped 300 Mosaic IPA – Fulton has a new mixed 12-pack, containing a Citra double dry-hopped version of 300, along with Lonely Blonde, Hopstar, and Proper Porter.
  • Proper Porter – The new mixed 12-pack also marks the first time Proper Porter has been packaged.
  • War & Peace – “It’s pitch black, smooth as silk, and packed to the brim with coffee flavor provided by a pound of organic Peace Coffee beans per barrel,” the brewery says of this winter seasonal coffee imperial stout. Available on draft and in 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles.

Garphish Brewing Company

  • Tiller Motor Mild – WIth a light malt aroma and some fruitiness, Garphish notes that this beer is slightly sweet but with a dry finish and a low 3.6% ABV.

HammerHeart Brewing Company

This Saturday marks Dark (Pale) Gourd Night, and HammerHeart is toasting the date with the release of four bottled beers, two returning and two, Hail to the Pale Gourd and Draugr, listed in the “new” section above.

  • Blåtand – Made with wild Scandinavian bilberries in addition to the blueberries used in previous incarnations.
  • Stjørdal – A Norwegian farmhouse alderwood smoked beer that HammerHeart brewed for the first time in December 2017.

  • Old Friend – This winter warmer pours a deep ruby red with a malt base complemented by ginger root, honey, and orange peel. Available now in 4-packs of 16-ounce cans.

Lift Bridge Brewing Company

  • Commander – Out this Saturday, the 2018 batch of this popular English-style barleywine features a strong malt focus with subtle, sweet cardamom, the brewery says. It derives extra depth from aging in bourbon barrels. 12.5% ABV.

LTS Brewing Company

  • Hallucination American Double IPA – A 9.3% ABV, 89 IBU double IPA.
  • Oatmeal Stout – Pouring at 4.9% ABV, 32 IBU, LTS says this is “Slightly sweeter than a dry stout, but less-so than milk stout, our creamy, toasty oatmeal stout is almost like eating an oatmeal cookie—without all the chewing.”
  • Saison d’Vie – A Belgian-style saison at 7.5% ABV, 26 IBU, this ale offers flavors of orange, pepper, and lemongrass with a spicy yet dry finish. Available in 750-milliliter bottles.

Number 12 Cider

Rebranded from Number 12 Cider House and relocated from Buffalo to Minneapolis, Number 12 has opened a taproom within walking distance of Fulton, Modist, and Target Field.

There are 16 total taplines. Among their offerings, their three flagships feature new names:

  • Royal Raspberry Sour – A tart, fruited Berliner Weisse that started at the taproom, expanded to restaurants, and is now available in four-packs of 16-ounce cans.

  • Fat Bike – The mulled apple cider is available in the taproom now and coming to liquor stores.

Steel Toe Brewing

  • Size 4 – This session IPA is now available in cans.
  • Sticker Fight – Steel Toe’s double IPA is now available in cans at area liquor stores.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Abrasive – The double IPA is back this year with a heavy dose of Citra hops. Made in Brooklyn Center, it’s available now.
  • Cacao Bender – “Our oatmeal brown ale gets aged on cacao nibs and vanilla (beans, not extract) and finished with cold press coffee, yielding a lush, cappuccino-like creaminess,” Surly says. Available at the Beer Hall now.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

  • Dynamo Orange Chocolate Imperial Stout – Available in bottles and and on tap at select locations starting today, November 9.

  • Waveform – The West Coast-style IPA is available again.

  • Barleywine – Returning next Tuesday as part of 10K’s anniversary celebration this week marking three years for the brewery.
  • Barrel Aged Barleywine – Releasing next Saturday, November 17, in celebration of three years of business at the Anoka brewery.

Badger Hill Brewing Company

  • Imperial Macchiato Stout – Made with Shakopee-made Cameron’s coffee, this limited-edition stout has robust coffee flavors and a touch of sweetness, the brewery says. Available on November 21.

Blacklist Artisan Ales

Blacklist is offering three specialty 750-milliliter bottles for the holiday season, going on sale at the taproom and select stores on November 24. Thanksgiving weekend also marks the Duluth brewery’s second taproom anniversary.

  • Gitch – A sweet, full-bodied cider with notes of apple.
  • Loral – A single-hopped semi-sweet cider with berry and rose notes.
  • Sawtooth – A single-hopped semi-sweet cider with a citrus finish and gentle Saaz hop flavors.
  • The Navigator – A hopped semi-dry cider with hints of sage and eucalyptus.
  • Zenith – The cidery says this is a dry chardonnay-like cider with hints of oak, lemon, and butter.
  • Chai – Their traditional cider infused with a smooth blend of rich, autumnal chai spices, according to the cidery.
  • Bliss – A semi-sweet cider tastefully infused with cranberry and herbs.


  • Stout Aged in Bulleit Bourbon Barrels – Brewed in Dublin and aged at Guinness’ US facility, this limited edition barrel-aged Irish stout will be available soon.

  • Rosé d’Orge – “This was brewed to be a meeting point of beer and wine in the rosé style,” says Wild Mind, who used Cabernet Franc grapes in the secondary fermentation. “The result is a light pink beverage that has a dry, tannic body and notes of cab franc and sparkling cider with a spritzy finish.”
