The Mash-Up: Light and bright beer releases keep summer alive

With over 150 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. Visit every Friday for the latest or sign up for a weekly email.

While dark malts color seasonal beers as we gear up for fall, the truth is that it’s still technically summer and this week’s new releases are all across the board. There are fruity and bright refreshing beers, a brand new hefeweizen, and a number of Belgian-influenced beers, including a new quad by Boom Island (coming soon) and the return of Quadruplication at Unmapped. In the ever-evolving IPA genre, Indeed has announced their first year-round IPA (Flavorwave), and Surly, Barrel Theory, Brew d’Etat, and more have new options coming out as well.

Anyone looking for a good day trip might consider Foragerfest in Rochester this Saturday, plus Moose Lake and Shakopee Brewhall have anniversaries in the near future.



Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Boom Island Quad

Made according to Belgian Trappist tradition, Boom Island describes this beer as follows: “Malty, dark, and as mysterious as a Belgian monastery, our Quad has hues of reddish brown with a hint of sweetness that belies its 10.2% ABV.” It will be available in 750-milliliter bottles starting September 21 and soon after in 11.2-ounce bottles.

Forager Brewery Breakfast Nook

This 12% ABV imperial porter, aged in a variety of barrel types, was conditioned on coconut, maple, vanilla, coffee, cocoa nibs, and cinnamon. 800 bottles will be available for sale at the brewpub in Rochester this Saturday.

Dangerous Mang Earthbound Gruit

Brewed in collaboration with Earthbound Beer of St. Louis, Missouri. “[We’re] super excited to be working with these guys and learn about brewing without hops. Bitterness and flavors will come from a huge red cedar addition to the mash and heather flowers in the boil kettle,” Dangerous Man says. 6.6% ABV.

Town Hall Brewery Alpha Nimbus

An aggressively hopped Belgian white ale with orange peel, coriander, and American IPA hops. Available starting Labor Day.

Unmapped Brewing Mango Topo

A Belgian white ale with mangoes, Unmapped says this beer offers “a deliciously tasty symphony of zesty spice, orange peel, and tropical fruit.” 5.4% ABV, 13 IBU.

12welve Eyes Brewing

  • Cataracts: Vic Secret – This batch of Cataracts hazy IPA showcases Australian hops and has prominent tropical fruit notes.
  • Coconut Milk Stout – A sessionable stout with added lactose and toasted coconut.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

  • Hefeweizen – A new 6.5% ABV hefeweizen now available at the brewery.
  • Stop Looking at Me Swan – This new IPA features Motueka, Citra, and BRU-1 hops. 6.7% ABV.

Beaver Island Brewing Company

  • Selke – Beaver Island teamed up with St. Cloud State in honor of their 150th year. This sessionable pale ale pours at 4.3% ABV, 33 IBU, and is described as having a “balanced bitterness, citrus flavors and aromas, as well as local malt from Malt Werks in Detroit Lakes.”

Bent Paddle Brewing Co.

  • Cherry Lime Tart Wheat – Bent Paddle describes this taproom offering as “a refreshingly tart fruit beer.”

Blue Wolf Brewing Company

  • A Roll in the Hay – A Belgian saison/farmhouse ale with complex malt flavors and subtle hops, the brewery says. 7.6% ABV, 24 IBU.

Bobbing Bobber Brewing Company

  • Dopplegänger Dunkelweizen – The brewery describes this as “the dark twin of a hefeweizen.” 5.4% ABV, 15 IBU.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Quad – Top Flight selection.

Brew d’Etat

  • The Boss – This new beer is a juicy double IPA with Pilsner and white wheat in the grain bill, then dry-hopped with El Dorado and Mosaic Cryo. 8.3% ABV, 60 IBU.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Dragon Fruit Strawberry Milkshake IPA – An upcoming milkshake IPA brewed with 20 pounds of dragon fruit, plus rice, oats, barley, lactose, and strawberries. 6.9% ABV, 68 IBU.
  • Earthbound Gruit – Top Flight selection.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • Feeling Good, Louis! – A new brut IPA with “boatloads” of kiwi. Available at the brewery now. 6% ABV .

Forager Brewery

Saturday marks Foragerfest 2018. The Rochester brewpub is celebrating all day long with several special releases:

  • Breakfast Nook – Top Flight selection.

In addition, 400 Crowlers will be available for each of the following:

  • Goat Rodeo – A mixed-grain hazy double IPA.
  • Humble Hops – A hazy double IPA with Vic Secret hops.
  • One Night in Bangkok – A Thai latte imperial pastry stout.
  • Perma-grin – This is a sour smoothie IPA with coconut, pineapple, lime zest, vanilla beans, and lactose sugar.
  • Tiki Killers – An American sour ale with pink dragon fruit, passion fruit, mango, and pink guava.

A small amount of Crowlers will be available for:

  • Pudding Goggles – An imperial pastry porter made with coconut and cinnamon.
  • Tropical Gummies Make Us Likable – An American sour ale made with passion fruit, pineapple, mango, and pink guava.

Hoops Brewing Company

  • Hoops #501 Ryzen – This new German-style ale includes wheat, oats, maize, rye, and sweet orange peel. 5.8% ABV, 23 IBU.

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Cherry Limeade Super Slurp

Pryes Brewing Company

  • Blueberry Infusion Flight – Pryes celebrated Labor Day by offering blueberry infusions to three core beers: Summer IPA, Dublin Dry Stout, and Bohemian Blonde Ale.

Roets Jordan Brewery Co.

  • Heimatfest – A 6% ABV festbier.
  • Mill Pond – An American blonde ale pouring at 5.4% ABV, 35 IBU.
  • Mill Pond with Blackberry – Mill Pond blonde ale with added blackberry. 4.8% ABV, 31 IBU.

Rustech Brewing

  • Hazy Hi-Way – A new hazy blonde ale, tapped last Saturday.

Schram Vineyards Winery & Brewery

  • Honey Apple Ale – This cider/ale hybrid debuted last week. Made with cider produced by Wyndfall Cyder.

Steel Toe Brewing

  • Rather Large Ginger Ale – This new offering is a bourbon-aged Provider infused with ginger and lime.

Surly Brewing Company

  • 3DH – New in the BC Small Batch series, this triple dry-hopped IPA will be available the week of September 3 in limited supply.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • Mango Topo – A Belgian white ale with mangoes, Unmapped says this beer offers “a deliciously tasty symphony of zesty spice, orange peel, and tropical fruit.” 5.4% ABV, 13 IBU.

Urban Growler Brewing Company

  • Brut IPA – “Our Brut IPA is brewed to be exceptionally dry (think Champagne) with noticeable haze, low bitterness, and an explosion of pineapple and tropical hop flavor from an overabundance of El Dorado hops,” the brewery says. 7% ABV, 10 IBU.
  • Plum Grisette – “Similar to a saison in yeast and malt profile, grisettes tend to be lighter-bodied with a more prominent hop profile than their Belgian cousins. We’ve added a heap of Minnesota grown plums from Swenson Orchards to compliment the noble hops and distinctive Belgian yeast,” the brewery says. 5.2% ABV, 18 IBU.

  • Old Town Altbier – 5% ABV, 40 IBU

Bang Brewing

  • Neat – A sparkling bitter ale at 4.9% ABV, 90 IBU—also served infused with heirloom tomato juice as a Bloody Neat.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Silvius Belgian Pale Ale – A classic Belgian-style pale ale with light hop bitterness, toasted malt, and peppery spice with a medium-dry finish. 5.5% ABV, 29 IBU, and available today.

Drekker Brewing

  • Hausterhosen Festbier – “Hausterhosen Festbier very, very loosely translates to ‘Fall Pants Party Beer,’” according to their Twitter feed.

  • Herbstklagen – A seasonal Märzen rauchbier was released in bottles last weekend.
  • Valkyrie Tears – A hazy triple IPA that pours at 11% ABV.

  • Honey Brut IPA – 7.5% ABV, 69 IBU

Steel Toe Brewing

  • Brown Porter – A 5% ABV English-style porter that the brewery describes as having notes of chocolate and biscuit.

Town Hall Brewery

  • Alpha Nimbus – An aggressively hopped Belgian white ale with orange peel, coriander, and American IPA hops. Available Labor Day.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • Quadruplication – Made with dark candi sugar, this Trappist-style quadrupel is back on tap at the brewery. 10% ABV, 25 IBU.

  • Hopped Cider – On tap at the cider house and, as of last weekend, garnished with a fresh-picked hop.

  • UFO Double IPA – A new unfiltered double IPA featuring Galaxy hops, this “Unfiltered Fruity Object” debuts in the taproom on September 12 and in 16-ounce cans on September 19.

Bad Weather Brewing Company

  • TBD fresh hop beer – The brewery recently collected and brewed fresh Cascade hops from Mighty Axe for an upcoming beer.

Badger Hill Brewing Company

  • Oktoberfest Marzen – Returns on Tuesday September 1.

Bent Brewstillery

  • Maroon & Bold – The all local ingredient double IPA is back on tap at the Roseville brewstillery on October 5, including an all-day special on pitchers.

Brewery Ommegang

  • King in the North – The final offering in the Game of Thrones-inspired Royal Reserve Collection, this Jon Snow-inspired imperial stout is a jet black barrel-aged offering that pours with a thick tan head, the brewery says, with aromas of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate along with oak, bourbon, and vanilla. Available on Black Friday, November 23.

Earth Rider Brewery

  • Fest Bier – Coming September 13.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • Chateau Estate Reserve 2018 – Brewed in collaboration with Wild Mind Artisan Ales (to be served at both breweries later this fall), this mixed fermentation table beer uses 100 pounds of fresh Centennial hops (from Mighty Axe), to be naturally conditioned in kegs and bottles.

Fargo Brewing Company

  • Farm Fresh – A fresh hop pale ale brewed this week.

Great Lakes Brewing Company

  • Moondog Ale – A smooth body ale with notable hop bite, coming to 16-ounce cans across the country beginning on September 10. 5.5% ABV, 30 IBU.

Indeed Brewing Company

  • Flavorwave – Believe it or not, this will be Indeed’s first year-round IPA. “For the recipe of our first year-round IPA, we felt it was appropriate to explore current trends in hopping techniques both in the brew kettle as well as dry-hopping. We chose a handful of our favorite classics and new American hops all leaning towards a juicy and fruity profile. The end results in layers (or waves) of hop flavor and aroma while leaving the ‘old school’ signature IPA bitterness largely behind,” says head brewer Josh Bischoff. According to Indeed, “Flavorwave pours a bright golden hue with a subtle haze, a light body, and a crisp finish.” It debuts on tap and in cans next week. 6.2% ABV, 73 IBU.

The brewery also announced plans for Hullabaloo 2018, taking place at the brewery Oct. 6-7. The event’s lineup will include:

  • Flavorwave IPA, Mix & Mingle Old Fashioned Brown Ale, Zwickelbier, Day Tripper, B-Side Pils, Lucy Session Sour, Fresh Hop IPA, Stir Crazy Porter, Yamma Jamma, specialty beers from the Wooden Soul series, Heliotropic, and a barrel wall.

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Hop Tun – This whole-cone fresh hop ale will return soon.

Lake Monster Brewing

  • Loonatick Fresh Hop Ale – This annual fresh hop ale was brewed recently with fresh Centennial hops from Mighty Axe farms.

Left Hand Brewing Company

  • 25th Anniversary – The brewery is celebrating at their Colorado home on Friday September 21 with the release of this special beer, an imperial stout available in 4-packs.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • Black Lager – A dark lager coming in mid-to-late September. 5% ABV, 25 IBU.
  • Oktoberfest – Lupulin celebrates Oktoberfest with a party at the taproom on October 13. They’ll also release this seasonal Märzen-style lager in its honor.

Pryes Brewing Company

  • TBD – An unnamed fresh hop beer is in the works at Pryes.

Shakopee Brewhall

  • 60 Schilling – A new Scottish ale from Shakopee’s year-old brewery, tapping on Tuesday September 11.
  • Mandala – An anniversary triple IPA available in limited bottles as well as at the taproom, starting on Friday September 14.

Sociable Cider Werks

  • TBD – An unnamed collaboration with Beaver Island is in the works. 

Summit Brewing Company

  • Dark Infusion – As announced at the start of the year, this coffee milk stout from 2016 will be the first-ever Unchained Series beer to make a return. It hit the tanks this week.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Axe Man Cold Press Coffee Infusion – Available at the Beer Hall for Infusion Tuesday, September 11.
  • MIX Lactose IPA – A hazy IPA with a touch of lactose, Surly says this full-bodied IPA offers citrus and berry flavors and will be available at the Beer Hall only, beginning on September 12.

Urban Forage Winery and Cider House

  • Blackcurrant Cider – Coming to the cider house soon, according to a recent newsletter.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Batch 100 – The one hundredth batch at Venn will be a triple IPA with the “holy trinity” of hops: Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic.
  • Pineapple Sour – Returning soon.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • Chateau Estate Reserve 2018 – Brewed in collaboration with Fair State (to be served at both breweries later this fall), this mixed fermentation table beer uses 100 pounds of fresh Centennial hops (from Mighty Axe), to be naturally conditioned in kegs and bottles.
  • Sang De Chêne – This sour ale was aged in Cognac barrels on blackberries, and was conditioned on ginger and vanilla beans. It will be available exclusively to Forgotten Barrel Society members.
