The Mash-Up: Minnesota State Fair announces this year’s beer line-up

With over 150 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. The announcement this week of 27 new Minnesota State Fair beers and several other unique returning recipes gives beer fans in the Bold North a lot to talk about. While garnishes and infusions are always fun, there’s a lot going on everywhere.

The annual Red Stag In Cahoots! block party brings us several one-of-a-kind collaborations between in-state breweries, out-of-state visitors, a cider maker, and a distillery. Unmapped has three special releases to celebrate Glen Lake Day Block Party in Minnetonka and Elk River is hosting the first-of-its-kind Lupulin Brewery IPA Invitational all-IPA beer festival.

Fruits, infusions, garnishes, bruts, and hazes are just the start of what’s new in Minnesota beers available this week and beyond.

Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Pryes Summer IPA

For this year’s summer IPA, Pryes combined the traits of both a hazy and session-style IPA. “This combination created a New England-style session IPA that highlights tropical flavor given to us by the use El Dorado hops and a huge fruity backbone provided from use of Eureka and Mosaic hops,” the brewery says. 4.4% ABV. Available at 2pm on August 4.

Dangerous Man Mango Brut IPA

Made with Pilsner malt, honey malt, and a small amount of mangoes, this beer is Dangerous Man’s first zero IBU IPA. Tapped on July 31, it was “Hopped (all cold side) w/ Denali, Hallertau Blanc, and Huell Melon,” according to the brewery.

Bent American Guardian

Developed with Invisible Wounds Project, American Guardian is the latest creation from Roseville’s Bent Brewstillery, a “Premium American Lager.”  The beer is set to be released at 12pm on Saturday during the fourth annual Car-B-Que event, and a portion of all proceeds goes to Invisible Wounds Project, which focuses on raising awareness and providing services to military and emergency personnel who are battling PTSD, mental health issues, and suicide.

Drekker Mind Bullets Sour IPA

This sour, 7.1% ABV IPA was brewed with oats, spelt, and lactose, and then hopped with Mosaic, Huell Melon, and Hallertau Blanc. “The tart, sour character really brings out the fruity notes in the hops for a bright citrus flavor that’s balanced by the soft, creamy body from the oats and lactose,” according to the Fargo, North Dakota brewery.

Barrel Theory Keyboard Warrior

Tapped last weekend, this deeply dark chocolate milk stout is ready for thirsty drinkers at the Lowertown brewery and in Crowlers. Crafted with lots of cacao, the stout clocks in at 7% ABV.

  • Sourmeister – A Berliner weisse with Waldmeister Sirup, tapped on Sunday, July 29.

56 Brewing

  • Beer Slushies – 56 is offering a summer-themed beer slushie with flavors such as Peach Sour and Northeast Nectar Margarita. The brewery recently ordered additional fermenters to keep up with growth.
  • Sexy Beach – A pineapple and coconut milkshake IPA brewed with malted oats, lactose, coconut, vanilla, and pineapple puree. 7.8% ABV.

Able Seedhouse + Brewery

  • Top Cool – This In Cahoots! collaboration crosses state lines. Made in conjunction with Solemn Oath Brewery (Naperville, Illinois), Top Cool is a rye pale ale that showcases Able’s rye malt and Solemn Oath’s Belgian yeast.

Angry Hog Brewery & Taproom

  • Jimmy’s BB Gun – Brown ale
  • Muddy Snout – Oatmeal stout
  • Smart Ass Wit – Witbier

Avery Brewing Co.

  • Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Ale – The Colorado brewery celebrates 25 years with the release of this Belgian-style, oak-aged dark ale with added honey, dates, and raisins.

Back Channel Brewing

  • Piano Flow – A new pale ale with notes of berry, melon, cantaloupe, and orange, the brewery says, plus an orange pith bitterness and persistent citrus. 6.0% ABV, 42 IBU.
  • The Gant Lifter IIPA – Massively dry-hopped, the brewery says, this double IPA debuted on August 2 (National IPA Day).

Bang Brewing

  • Snap – Bang teams up with Tattersall Distillery on this unique generver-inspired ale that was brewed with organic malt, kerna, hops, black currants, and botanicals. Available at In Cahoots!, the Red Stag block party this Sunday.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

  • Keyboard Warrior – Top Flight selection.
  • Tiki Dream – An In Cahoots! collaboration with Dangerous Man, a tiki-inspired IPA with passion fruit, mango, pineapple, coconut, and “a touch” of citrus.

Bauhaus Brew Labs

  • Black Hole Sun – A petite saison with blackberry and lemon, brewed in collaboration with Bent Paddle for the upcoming In Cahoots! party at Red Stag on August 5.

  • Tiki Dream – An In Cahoots! collaboration with Barrel Theory, a tiki-inspired IPA with passion fruit, mango, pineapple, coconut, and “a touch” of citrus.

  • Mind Bullets Sour IPA – Top Flight selection.

Excelsior Brewing Company

  • Sunburn Cherry Wheat – This small batch offering is a tart cherry hefeweizen with clove and banana notes, the brewery says. 4.4% ABV, 18 IBU.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

  • BBRR – Also known as Blackberry Blueberry Raspberry Roselle, a limited batch (just 200 bottles) will be sold at the taproom on Saturday.
  • Go Halfsies Grapefruit Radler – This Red Stag block party collaboration will be available on August 5. Brewed in partnership with Indeed (see below) at 3.5% ABV, 17 IBU.

Forager Brewery

  • Dreamin’ ‘bout Djibouti – A spiced, Middle Eastern-inspired coconut coffee porter. 9% ABV.
  • Preserved Lemon Gose – This is a German-style gose aged on house-preserved lemons. 4.8% ABV.
  • Rent-A-Hop – A hazy double IPA brewed with Denali, Mosaic, and Ekuanot hops. 8% ABV.

Imminent Brewing

  • Kleines Dunkel Ale – “This small (kleines) dark (dunkel) ale (NOT lager) packs all of that bready and toasty malt-forward goodness found in those tasty lagers from Bavaria into your pint glass at only 4.3% ABV,” Imminent says. 20 IBU.

Fulton Brewing

  • On the Other Hand – A collaboration with Colorado’s Left Hand, this is a dry IPA made with three different hop varieties. Available at In Cahoots!.

Indeed Brewing Company

  • Go Halfsies Grapefruit Radler – This Red Stag block party collab will be available on Saturday. Brewed in partnership with Fair State, the brewery described the radler as “Grapefruit with enough malt character to let you know there’s still beer.” 3.5% ABV, 17 IBU.

Insight Brewing

  • Belgian IPA – This new small batch release was highlighted at Insight’s National IPA Day celebration on Thursday, August 2.

Invictus Brewing Co.

  • Vic Golden Spite SMaSH – 6% ABV, 70 IBU
  • Wifey White IPA – 6.2% ABV, 75 IBU

Loony’s Brew

  • King Kong – The brewery describes this as a changing of the seasons beer that’s full-bodied with a hefty 11.7% ABV, 9 IBU.
  • Merlin Gruit Ale – This herb-brewed gruit features wormwood, tansy, sage, mandrake root, mugwort, and yarrow and comes in at 6.4% ABV.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • Centsless – This is a Centennial-hopped West Coast IPA, available at the brewery now. 6.5% ABV, 60 IBU.
  • West Coast Bias – An 8% ABV, 80 IBU West Coast-style double IPA to debut on Saturday.

Modist Brewing Co.

  • Rad Summer – Available at In Cahoots!, this collaboration with Surly is a radler with red grapefruit, plus added electrolytes. It’s got electrolytes, so it must be healthy, right?

  • Peach Passion Fruit American Wild Ale – Brewed in collaboration with Wild Mind for the In Cahoots! block party at Red Stag August 5.
  • Summer IPA – Top Flight selection.

Rustech Brewing

  • Canyon Drifter – A new amber ale, tapped on Wednesday.

Schell’s Brewery

  • Planetary Gear Box – An apple raspberry sour brewed with Sociable Cider Werks and available at the Red Stag block party this Sunday.

  • Rocket Surgery – “This juicy, hazy IPA is brimming with Citra and Denali hops for a fruit-forward blast of hop flavor,” Surly says. Available at the Beer Hall only.

  • Long Hop Summer – Unmapped has multiple offerings for Glen Lake Day Block Party on Saturday. This is a light-bodied summer pale ale featuring the citrusy profile of Lemondrop hops. 5.8% ABV, 38 IBU.
  • My Own Damn Salt – A margarita-inspired gose with lime. 5.3% ABV, 8 IBU.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Pink Guava Sour – An upcoming kettle sour. 8.5% ABV, 0 IBU.
  • Scottish Pub Ale – This is a malt-forward offering with caramel notes, served at the brewery on nitro. 4.9% ABV, 20 IBU.
  • Venn-Arbeiter Wheat Pale Ale – A collaboration beer made with the soon-to-open Arbeiter Brewing, located in Minneapolis’ Longfellow neighborhood (in the old Harriet Brewing location). The beer is a “European-influenced American-style pale ale” made with Kazbek and Cascade hops. 5.3% ABV, 35 IBU.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • Peach Passion Fruit American Wild Ale – This In Cahoots! release is a collaboration with Pryes, available this Sunday at Red Stag.

  • Exotic Gummies Make Us Likable – Aka “Tiki Killers,” the brewery says, this version of Gummies Make Us Likable American sour ale features dragon fruit, passion fruit, and mango. 6% ABV.
  • Saint Francis – “Belgian-style wit brewed with a house spice blend and Creeping Charlie,” the brewery says. 5.5% ABV.

Great Lakes Brewing Company

  • Oktoberfest

Hoops Brewing Company

  • Kellerpils – A slightly cloudy Pilsner with floral notes and a mellow citrus finish, the brewery says. 5.5% ABV, 31 IBU.

Junkyard Brew Co.

  • Christian Bale Ale – A hop-forward pale ale available on draft at select locations.

Experimental Apricot Sour

  • Murky Dimensions – New England-style double IPA.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • BAM Nectar – The heavily dry-hopped pale ale returns. 5.5% ABV, 45 IBU.

Summit Brewing Company

  • Cranky Woodsman – A new nut brown ale described by the brewery as having notes of maple and smoke. It was brewed with Minnesota-grown puffed wild rice, plus Minnesota Cascade hops and Lacey barley—plus a touch of smoked oat malt and a hint of maple syrup. Available in the Summit Bonfire Box, which will debut next week. The beer is out now at Summit’s Ratskeller. 5.2% ABV, 30 IBU.

Unmapped Brewing Co.

  • Purgatory Pils – Named for the nearby Purgatory Creek, this Pilsner is light and refreshing, “but with plenty of flavor and a hint of spiciness from the Czech Saaz hops,” the brewery says. 5.3% ABV, 30 IBU, and to be available year-round.

  • Margarita-Style Kettle Sour Ale – “Reminiscent of a classic margarita, this is a kettle sour brewed with lime zest and sea salt, and aged in tequila-soaked barrel stoves,” 612 says of this beer, to be available exclusively at the Minnesota State Fair. 5.0% ABV, 5 IBU.

  • Coffee Cream Ale – Predicted for a mid-August release.

Bad Weather Brewing Company

  • Barrel Aged Calamity – Going into J. Carver rye whiskey barrels soon.
  • Bavarian Hefeweizen – Returning soon.

  • Spunomi Tsunami – Another State Fair beer, this ice cream-inspired beer is infused with strawberries and vanilla and topped with a pistachio garnish. 4.8% ABV, 10 IBU.

Bauhaus Brew Labs

  • The Shandlot Pink Lemon Shandy – A summer-minded beer infused with strawberries and hibiscus. 4.5% ABV, 15 IBU, and only at the State Fair.

Beaver Island Brewing Company

  • Uffda Ale – This State Fair offering is an easy drinking summer ale, but with a Norwegian twist by adding lefse and lingonberries. 4.7% ABV, 21 IBU.

Bell’s Brewery

  • Official – Bell’s will debut a new American wheat IPA next February. “Double dry-hopped, drinkable and made with 2 of our favorite ingredients: wheat malt and pungent American hops,” the hazy IPA will pour at 6.4% ABV and will be sold year-round.

Bent Brewstillery

  • Raspberry Champow – “The super fruity ale is crisp, tart, and refreshing,” according to the State Fair announcement. This beer is a collaboration with 2017 Minnesota State Fair Homebrew Contest winner Mike Spores, who created the recipe for this white ale with raspberries and Champagne grapes for a wider audience. 5.0% ABV, 25 IBU.

Bent Paddle Brewing Company

  • Passion Fruit Pils – This State Fair exclusive consists of Bent Paddle’s Venture Pils infused with passion fruit. 5.0% ABV, 38 IBU.

Big Wood Brewery

  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Beer – This dessert in a glass returns to the State Fair on August 23.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Cranberry Sour – Aged for two-plus years in barrels with cranberries added six months ago, this sour, tart, and complex 4.5% ABV beer returns on August 18.
  • Silvius Belgian Pale Ale – A classic Belgian-style pale ale with light hop bitterness, toasted malt, and peppery spice with a medium-dry finish. 5.5% ABV, 29 IBU, and available in 750-milliliter bottles on September 8 or—to use the Minnesota calendar—shortly after the State Fair ends.

Castle Danger Brewing

  • Grapefruit Ode IPA – Returning to the Minnesota State Fair this year.
  • Orange Cream Ale – Available at the State Fair exclusively, Orange Cream Ale “is infused with flavors of bright citrus orange and finishes with a slightly sweet and creamy texture.” 5.0% ABV.

Eastlake Craft Brewery

  • Kirby Pucker #34 – Eastlake’s sour series will pour a State Fair exclusive in #34. With lactobacillus, strawberries, and rhubarb, this one pours at 4.0% ABV, 3 IBU.

Excelsior Brewing Company

  • Horse Apple Ale – An ale brewed with pressed apple cider and cool autumn nights in mind. 5.7% ABV, 8 IBU, and available exclusively at the State Fair.
  • Maple Bacon Brown – Back on tap at the Fair this year, beginning on August 23.
  • S’Mores Beer – On tap at the Fair again this year.

FINNEGANS

  • Caramel Corn Cream Ale – Another State Fair offering: “A generous amount of corn in the brewing process gives this beer a pleasant caramel flavor. Fermenting at a uniquely higher temperature also gives way to a harmony between the hops and light, toasty caramel malts,” Fair spokespeople say. 5.4% ABV, 20 IBU.
  • St. Pat’s Green Ale – Also at the Fair only, this is described as a green light-bodied ale with slight fruit and floral aromas along with a creamy but crisp finish. 4.6% ABV, 22 IBU.

Fulton Brewing

  • Frontier Summer IPA – To be available at Frontier Bar at, you got it, the Minnesota State Fair, this is a full-bodied IPA described as hoppy, but also “light and approachable.” 5.5% ABV, 35 IBU.
  • Specter – Fulton’s New England-style IPA will return soon, according to a recent suggestive tweet.

Giesenbräu Bier Co.

  • BBL Aged Doppel the Hutt – This special beer will mark the brewery’s one year anniversary on October 28.
  • Bräu Bräu Bräu – Giesenbräu’s festbier returns for their Oktoberfest party on October 6.
  • Dozinky Pils – Available for New Prague’s Dozinky Days September 21-22.

Indeed Brewing Company

  • La Peche Mode – A brett saison aged with peaches for an upcoming Wooden Soul series release. 7.8% ABV.
  • Patch Work – Another upcoming Wooden Soul release, this is a sour barrel-aged red ale with blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. 7.5% ABV.

Lakes & Legends Brewing Company

  • St. Apple Malted Cider – A malted cider available only at the State Fair later this month, this uses apples and apple pie spice for a distinct Minnesota dessert flavor profile. 4.9% ABV.

Lake Monster Brewing Co.

  • Brewzo – This State Fair exclusive is inspired by Greek ouzo. It’s a Pilsner with licorice and a sugar-spiced rum. “Herbal ouzo flavors mingle with floral hops and a crisp malt flavor for a refreshing treat,” the Fair says. 5.4% ABV, 40 IBU.

Lake Superior Brewing Company

  • Oktoberfest – Returning to the Duluth brewery with their Augtoberfest, August 17-18.

Lift Bridge Brewing Company

  • Key Lime Pie Beer – The makers of the Mini Donut Beer have another unique State Fair exclusive to debut this year. The pie-inspired offering will come in a glass rimmed with organic coconut palm sugar. 4.5% ABV, 13 IBU.
  • Mini Donut Beer – Back on tap at the State Fair this year, sugar-rimmed glass and all.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • Two Nuts – An English brown ale at 6% ABV, 30 IBU.
  • Whiskey Nuts – A rye whiskey barrel-aged brown ale at 7% ABV, 40 IBU.

Mankato Brewery

  • Cake’d Up Celebration Beer – The State Fair isn’t just offering donut and pie beers, but cake as well. “This deep-fried cake-flavored beer is a lightly hopped ale featuring a distinct vanilla aroma with a sweet cake-like finish,” according to Fair spokespeople. 5.0% ABV, 20 IBU.

Schell’s Brewery

  • Cave-Aged Barrel-Aged No. 5 – A new Cave-Aged Barrel-Aged series beer is on the way, aged in different Woodford Reserve whiskey barrels, according to a recent tweet from Schell’s.
  • It Takes 2 to Tango and 3 to Mango – The Starkeller also has a beer at the ready for the State Fair. This will be a mixed culture Berliner Weisse aged on mangoes. According to the Fair’s statement, “It has a bright, fruity flavor of ripe mangoes on top of a refreshingly tart and dry lemony acidity.” 5.5% ABV, 5 IBU.

Sociable Cider Werks

  • Candy Apple Hard Cider – Returning to the State Fair this year.
  • Raspberry Hard Cider – Returning to the State Fair this year.
  • Slipstream Black Currant Apple – “Freshly pressed Midwestern apples fermented to a light bubbly effervescence then sweetened with floral and black currant berries for a flavor that is clean, crisp, and fruity,” in this 5.9% ABV State Fair recipe. Also available in a special mimosa or bellini at LuLu’s Public House.

Summit Brewing Company

  • Helles Ya, You Betcha! – Craft the Name 2.0 provides this name to the follow-up to Lazy Sipper. Available only at the State Fair (Lazy Slipper just became a regular release this summer), this helles lager is described as offering “flavors of tangerine and fresh blood orange for a clean mouthfeel and a hint of sourdough crust.” 4.2% ABV.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Frisson – New in the BC Small Batch series, this small-batch beer is a Champagne-inspired black currant lager with notes of honey and white wine. Available in limited supply.
  • Fruity Pebble Bender – Available in the Beer Hall on Infusion Tuesday, August 7.
  • Gaelic Dark & Stormy Ale – A golden ale with citrus, lime, and ginger to be served at the Minnesota State Fair beginning on August 23. 5.0% ABV, 15 IBU.
  • Juicy LuLuLucy IPA – “This hazy, NE-style IPA provides a fresh, juicy orange and grapefruit-like hop flavor,” says an official State Fair announcement. 6.7% ABV, 40 IBU.
  • The Kloser India Pale Ale – Glen Perkins collaborated with Surly once again to make this hop-heavy and citrus-forward IPA based on one of his homebrew recipes. 5.0% ABV, 64 IBU.
  • Oktoberfest – Surly Oktoberfest returns to draft lines next week. This malt-forward beer is described as rich and sweet with a dry hop-crisp finish.

Sweetland Orchard

  • Minnesota Mule Cider – Returning to the State Fair this year.

The Freehouse

  • LimeLight – With a slight agave sweetness plus lime and salt, this 5.4% ABV beer will be on tap at the State Fair later this month.

Tin Whiskers Brewing Company

  • Dill Pickle Ale – As the Fair’s official statement declares, “Tin Whiskers is keeping things funky at Giggles’ Campfire Grill with a new iteration of Dill Pickle Ale, formerly brewed by Barley John’s. This year’s pickle-inspired sipper is a crisp Kolsch-style beer aged on fresh cucumbers and dill sourced from the St. Paul Farmers’ Market.”

Urban Growler Brewing Company

  • Cranberry Beet Cream Ale – To be available at Urban Growler’s upcoming fourth anniversary party on August 22.
  • Honey IPA – Also available at the upcoming anniversary party on August 22.

Venn Brewing Company

  • Blackberry Sour – An upcoming new kettle sour, made with blackberries. 7.5% ABV, 0 IBU.
  • Golden Ale – This American-style golden ale is described as balanced with notes of honey, cracker, and stone fruit. 5.6% ABV, 16 IBU.
  • Mosaic Pale Ale – A new American pale ale featuring Mosaic hops and Simpson’s Golden Naked Oats. 5.0% ABV, 35 IBU.
