With well over 100 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up-to-date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. As Oktoberfest celebrations kicked off statewide (and in Germany), Minnesota breweries look to the past and celebrate milestones. Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub turned five this week and Third Street announced the second beer in their historic series. Meanwhile, Schell’s sour facility, The Starkeller, has the new Exit Velocity on tap.

In new beers, start-ups have plenty of new recipes on tap this week, such as Karst, Broken Clock, and Portage. For those looking for something festive, it’s the annual SurlyFest in Minneapolis, Lakeville’s two breweries released a collaborative double IPA, and Fulton and Gasthof teamed up for an exclusive Oktoberfest.

  • Hüll Melon SMaSH IPA

Angry Inch Brewing        

  • Lost Island – A New England–style double IPA, brewed in collaboration with Lakeville Brewing and on tap at both locations.

August Schell Brewing Co.        

  • Exit Velocity – A new Starkeller taproom offering. “It was aged in our cypress tanks then heavily dry hopped with Hallertau Blanc & Huell Melon hops. Bright and bursting with hoppy citrus aroma and lemon tartness,” says Schell’s.

Barrel Theory Beer Company        

  • Black Lotus – Coconut milk stout with coconut toasted in the Dark Horse kitchen. 6.8% ABV, now available.
  • Blood Orange Gose – A 4.0% ABV gose with blood orange juice, coriander, and pink Himalayan sea salt.

Bent Paddle Brewing

  • Citrus Party Kanū – Available in limited supply, Kanū infused with 250 pounds of oranges.

Birch’s On The Lake

  • Red Rye Saison – 6.0% ABV.

BlackStack Brewing        

  • Prior Pale Ale

Brau Brothers Brewing Co.

  • 3Trees IPA – It’s the first true IPA from Brau Brothers, a blend of El Dorado, Centennial, Cascade, and Amarillo hops, built on a malt mix of pale and Vienna malt. 7.0%, 67 IBU.

Clockwerks Brewing

  • Alt – A Düsseldorf-style altbier with a malty backbone.
  • Boho Rye Pilsner – Light-bodied and 4.7% ABV, 33 IBU.
  • Clockwerk Orange – A witbier at 4.5% ABV, 13 IBU. “Orange, Cloves, pepper, and coriander; light and refreshing,” says the brewery.
  • Cyr Strong – This high gravity Belgian strong has notes of grapes, apples, and pepper. 9.2% ABV, 26 IBU.
  • Dampfkraft – Easy drinking with caramel notes. 4.9% ABV, 30 IBU.
  • Mug Hunter IPA – Tropical fruit notes with pine and citrus flavors. This IPA features Ekuanot and Mosaic hops. 6.9% ABV, 83 IBU.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Mango Milkshake IPA – Herbal and citrus notes with mango in this creamy body IPA. 6.5% ABV, 70 IBU.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative        

  • 4HOP – This is the fourth in a series of hop-forward barrel-fermented beers, brewed with Nelson Sauvin, Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops. “Bright, hoppy, restrained acidity, with notes of tangerine, melon, white grape, tropical fruits and oak,” the brewery says. 5.1% ABV, 25  IBU.

Insight Brewing

  • Forb & Barb – This strawberry rhubarb American wild ale debuted on Wednesday. Available in bottles, draft and stores now.

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Guava Shake-O-Matic

Lakeville Brewing Co.

  • Lost Island – A DIPA collaboration with their neighbors at Angry Inch. This beer features New Zealand hops and is out now at both breweries.

OMNI Brewing Co.

OMNI celebrates their second anniversary from September 22–24 with four special releases.

  • F.A.D. (Frickin’ Awesome Delicious) – A hazy DIPA releasing on September 22.
  • Raspberry Milk Shake IPA – Also out on Friday, September 22.
  • Soaked 2017 – Fresh-hopped and available on Sunday, September 24.
  • The Sour One – OMNI’s first sour offering debuts on Saturday, September 23.

Portage Brewing Company        

  • Minna – Out today, this wild table beer is inspired by the Belgian tafelbier. With a wheat base, the brewery says it has “Notes of bright citrus and berries from our local wild yeast strain and a fruit forward hop bill.” 4.8% ABV, 17 IBU.
  • Mosaic Session – A session IPA with hoppy berry, citrus, tropical and pine notes. 4.8% ABV, 40 IBU.
  • Yakaya Wet Hop Golden Ale – This wet hop beer comes out on Saturday. Brewed in collaboration with Yakima Valley Hops, Loza Farms, and CHS Farms, it features freshly harvested Cascade and Chinook hops.

Revelation Ale Works

  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout – Revelation’s Chocolate Milk Stout with something special.

Sisyphus Brewing

  • He is California IPA – This Sunday, September 24, Sisyphus is releasing a new West Coast Styled IPA named after musician John Craigie’s song ‘I am California.’ Every glass of ‘He is California’ sold will be donated to North Minneapolis music program, Hopewell Music Cooperative North.

  • New England Style IPA

  • Keller Pils

Wicked Wort Brewing Co.        

  • Big Deal Kolsch infused with pomegranate – Released on September 20.
  • Big Twin IIPA infused with pineapple – Tapped back on September 15.
  • Double Dreamsicle – 8.0% ABV, 18 IBU.
  • Hoppy Vienna Lager – On tap now, this toasty lager finished with floral and citrus hop flavors.
  • Mango Pale Ale – Available now. 5.4% ABV, 35 IBU.
  • Wicked Wood Series: Bottle Release #1 – Wicked Wort gets into the bottle game on Saturday with this barrel aged barleywine that spent time in rye barrels. Sales begin at 12pm.

612Brew

  • Oktoberfest – “This brew is a traditional Bavarian-style fest beer—crystal bright and medium amber color. Full-bodied and malty with notes of bread crust and spicy noble hops,” says 612. Out on September 23 at the brewery’s annual party.

Bad Weather Brewing Company        

  • Belgian Brune – Now on tap, this beer is described as: “Aromas of raisin bread and dates this is a perfect for the transition into the fall.”
  • Mammatus Milk Stout – Back on tap, both on oxygen and nitrogen in the taproom.

Boom Island Brewing Company

  • Barrel Aged Raspberry Sour – This Spontaneous Series framboise returns on September 22. 4.8% ABV with a ruby hue. The brewery says it’s “slightly acidic and tart, with a lightly effervescent body and dry crown.”

Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative

  • Pocket Watch Pecan – A pecan English brown with flavors of biscuit, nuts, caramel, and pecans. 6.5% ABV, 23 IBU in this fall seasonal.

Castle Danger Brewery

  • Maple Marzen

Clockwerks Brewing

  • Tic-toktoberfest – An easy drinking lager with bready malt character, brewed in the festbier tradition. 5.1% ABV, 20 IBU.

Copper Trail Brewing Co.

  • Ole-toberfest – Oktoberfest, Scandinavian-style. Out on September 22 in Alexandria.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Watermelon Sour – Back on tap in Northeast. 5.4% ABV, 6 IBU.

Disgruntled Brewing

  • Damn Good DIPA – Crowler release party this Saturday.

Eastlake Craft Brewery

  • Achilles’ Heel – A hoppy wit that pours at 7.0% ABV.
  • Pennant Race – Eastlake calls this their version of an Oktoberfest. “Pennant Race uses German Mandarina Bavaria hops to bring an orange marmalade character to a toasty and sweet malt bill,” the brewery says.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative 

Several beers return for Co-Optoberfest this Saturday.

  • Barrel-Aged Stupid Sexy Flanders – Flanders red, barrel aged.
  • Blueberry Barrel-Fermented Du Pounde – A mixed culture, oak-fermented fruited versions of their flagship saison.
  • Passion Fruit Barrel-Fermented Du Pounde – A mixed culture, oak-fermented fruited versions of their flagship saison.
  • Time Debt – “A dark sour beer fermented in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels that add notes of wood smoke, vanilla, and char, alongside strong acidity and funk,” Fair State says.

Flat Earth Brewing 

  • Mummy Train Pumpkin Ale – Available in the taproom

Foxhole Brewhouse

  • Pumpkin Ale – Five malts and 80 pounds of pumpkin, plus vanilla and pumpkin spices. 6.2% ABV, 18 IBU.

Fulton Brewing

  • Oktoberfest – Fulton brewed an exclusive beer for Gasthofs this year, tapping Friday.

HeadFlyer Brewing        

  • Vanilla Bean Porter

The Herkimer Pub & Brewery

  • Oktoberfest – This German-influenced beer will be celebrated at the brewpub on September 23. 5.5% ABV, 26 IBU.

Hoops Brewing

  • #9 Pomegranate Rye – A crimson beer with sweet fruity aromas and hints rye, pepper and more. 6.0%, 22 IBU.
  • #48 IPA – “An old school hop forward dank, piney, fruity full-bodied IPA,” says Hoops. 8.3% ABV, 98 IBU.
  • #67 Oktober Weisn – Brewed under the Bavarian beer purity law of 1516, Hoops describes #67 as: the character of a typically light bottom-fermented festival beer—a deep golden yellow, with a balanced harmonious taste and the pleasant fragrance of hops. Full-bodied, wonderfully light and slightly sweet.

Indeed Brewing Company

  • Let It Roll IPA – The fall seasonal IPA is back on September 18. The beer features notes of papaya, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon zest. It will be available until next February.

  • Destruction Wheat Wine – Aged in a rye whiskey barrel from J. Carver Distillery, this will be on sale at Lupine’s Oktoberfest celebration Saturday.

  • Major Whittet’s English Style Barleywine – In bourbon barrels now, scheduled for release “in a few months.”

  • Fireside Flannel – Lift Bridge has a new brown ale, out next week.

  • WHOADA Wet Hop IPA – Brewed with hops grown by Metropolitan Hops.

Portage Brewing Company        

  • Coppercamp – An English amber ale with medium bitterness. 5.6% ABV, 25 IBU, on deck at the brewery.
  • Butternut Squash Coppercamp – Coppercamp, plus “warming flavors of butternut squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger,” says the brewery.
  • English Golden Ale – Coming soon. 4.7% ABV, 23 IBU.

Revelation Ale Works        

  • Whiskey Barrel Aged Brown Ale – This brown ale spent four months in Far North Spirits Roknar Whiskey Barrels.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Bender with Orange Zest – Available for Cask Tuesday at the Beer Hall on October 3.

Third Street Brewhouse        

  • Cold Spring Pilsner – The second beer in the Historic Beer Series debuts on October 1. This is a dry-hopped pilsner in honor of Cold Springs Brewing’s founder, Michael Sargl. In the 1970s the brewery later featured a dry-hopped Pilsner. The brewery describes it as having “bright, hoppy aromas and flavors.”
