The Mash-Up: Oktoberfests, Fresh Hops, and Surly Darkness Looms

With over 175 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up to date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. It’s harvest season. For the hopheads that means fresh hop IPAs across the state while those who favor a more balanced approach have more Oktoberfest and Märzen lagers than you can shake your boot at. New taps around the state this week are often seasonal in nature, with locally grown hops often taking center stage and German-influence beers serving as the backbone to celebrations.

But there are also a plethora of anniversary beers on the market right now, civic-minded collaborations with the city of Albertville and the Edina Historical Society, Darkness Day via Surly, and some new hard seltzer news for those who want something lighter with less gluten.

 

 

Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Birch’s on the Lake Blanc Berliner

Another Berliner Weisse, this was brewed with sauv blanc grapes and fermented with wine yeast, released in honor of the brewpub’s fourth anniversary.

Indeed Liliko’i

New in the Wooden Soul series soon, this wood barrel-aged passion fruit wild ale pours golden orange with passion fruit juiciness and funky tartness, Indeed says. 8.5% ABV.

Northbound Lost Boys

To celebrate its seventh anniversary, Northbound tapped a new beer every Tuesday and Friday throughout September: eight new beers in total and two new offerings this week. Lost Boys is a barrel-aged Belgian dark strong ale debuting today.

Surly Darkness

This year’s batch of Surly’s renowned Russian imperial stout returns on September 28 at a two-day music and beer festival in Somerset, WI. Expect chocolate, coffee, cherry, raisin, toffee, and aromatic hops. This year’s bottle features artwork by Tim Chapman. Bottles will hit liquor stores around Halloween.

Lupulin Mighty Wet

A whole-cone wet hop IPA that pours at 6.5% ABV, 50 IBU. “These hops barely make it off the line before they were infused into our wort to extract the most aroma and flavor as possible. We took it a step further and did a second infusion with freshly kilned hops,” Lupulin says of the process.

  • Bourbon Barrel Aged Darker Territory – Darker Territory double dark chocolate and coconut stout, aged in in Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Woodford Reserve whiskey barrels. Part of a bottle release at the brewery this Saturday.
  • Bourbon Barrel Aged Sarlock – Sarlock Russian Imperial Stout, aged in in Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Woodford Reserve whiskey barrels. Part of a bottle release at the brewery on Saturday.

  • Oktoberfest – The featured beer at the St. Joseph brewery’s Oktoberfest celebration tonight.

  • Oak Aged American Barleywine – “This brand new beer has flavors of caramel, toffee, piney hops and has (subtle) warming, assertive bitterness and pours light hazy amber color,” the brewery says.

Bauhaus Brew Labs 

  • Bolo – A new hard seltzer option from Bauhaus, available in 12-ounce cans and on tap in dragonfruit, lime, cherry, and mango flavor. 5% ABV, gluten free.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co.

  • Bluegrass Kanū – The September Infusion Series release is Kanu session pale ale with blueberry, lemongrass, and lemon. 4.8% ABV, 48 IBU.
  • Wet Hop Centennial IPA – A 6.5% ABV, 50 IBU fresh-hopped IPA made with locally grown hops.

Birch’s On The Lake

  • Blackberry Blood Orange Berliner Weiss – A 5.2% ABV kettle sour made with blackberry and blood orange, released in honor of the brewpub’s fourth anniversary.
  • Blanc Berliner – Top Flight selection.

BlackStack Brewing

  • In the Pocket – A new 12.6% ABV imperial stout with hazelnuts, cinnamon, and coffee that the brewery describes as oily, nutty, rich, and thick.
  • Wavy – A new batch of Wavy double dry-hopped IPA is available, featuring Mosaic and Denali hops. 7.2% ABV.
  • Wavier – Similar to Wavy, this DDH IPA pours at 7.3% ABV with a touch of Cashmere hops as well.

Dangerous Man Brewing Company

  • Oktoberfest – “This harvest lager was brewed with Warrior hops in the kettle for a nice balance and an Oktoberfest yeast strain that accentuates it’s beautiful malt characteristics. This Oktoberfest is toasty, bready, [and] malt-driven,” the brewery explains.

Dual Citizen Brewing Company

  • Hiawatha – A 10% IPA with tropical fruit, apricot, melon, pineapple, and bitter, hoppy notes, the brewery says. “Some esters are apparent but contribute to the tropical fruit flavors.”

ENKI Brewing

  • Oktoberfest – On Saturday the brewery will host an Oktoberfest party, including a beer of the same style.

Falling Knife Brewing Co.

The newest brewery in Northeast Minneapolis will be opening soon, throwing a weekend-long grand opening celebration on October 18–20. When at full capacity, the brewery has room for 16 tap lines.

The brewery will debut some of their beers in advance, including three beers at a tasting at Grumpy’s Northeast tonight:

  • Falling Frieschutz North German Pils
  • Ghost Up Coffee Stout
  • Terminally Chill West Coast IPA

  • Infinite Monkey Therom Serum – A new dry-hopped IPA at Fergus Falls’ newest brewery. 7.1% ABV. The brewery also reports plans to release a lager, blond ale, blood orange saison, Postman’s Breakfast Stout, Mexican-style lager, dunkelweizen, and Oktoberfest.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company

  • Coconut Merlin – A new milk stout made with real toasted coconuts. A limited seasonal release.

Forager Brewery

  • Groomzilla – A 7.3% ABV, 30 IBU hazy IPA that tapped last Friday.
  • WT Light – A 4.2% ABV, 20 IBU American light lager.

Founders Brewing Co.

  • Harvest Ale – Made with fresh Michigan hops, this is a 7.6% ABV aromatic IPA with pine, melon, and citrus flavors.

Giesenbräu BierCo

  • Wet Hop IPA – Made with Centennial and Chinook wet hops from Lloyd Ann’s Hop Farm in Waterville. 6.0% ABV.

Hoops Brewing Company

  • #67 Oktoberfest Wiesn – A 6.5% ABV, 18 IBU Munich-inspired festival lager.
  • #704 Apple Ale – A 5.3% ABV, 16 IBU ale made with fresh press apple.
  • #5050 Hefeweizen – A German-style hefeweizen that pours at 5.5% ABV, 17 IBU.

Inbound BrewCo

  • Hazy Shades – A new hazy New England-style IPA that debuts at the brewery’s Mullet Party on Saturday. “Hazy Shades is a NEIPA featuring six rounds of Amarillo, Citra, and El Dorado hops. A mouthfeel more pillowy than your bell bottoms and a citrusy hop profile more flavorful than your disco suit,” the brewery says. 6.9% ABV, 57 IBU.

Indeed Brewing Company

  • Liliko’i – Top Flight selection.

Invictus Brewing

  • James – Tapped today, this is a maple nut brown ale made with maple syrup and pecan meal.

Junkyard Brewing Co.

  • Banana Barge Banana Orange Oat Blonde
  • Double Terminal Delight – A double cream soda sour with tart and fruity flavors of pomegranate, cherry, blueberry, and vanilla. 8.7% ABV.
  • Junktoberfest – Tapped earlier this week as part of a series of Oktoberfest-minded events running Wednesday through this Sunday at the brewery.
  • We’re Burning Daylight – “This New England Style IPA is both fruity and earthy. Aromas and flavors of passionfruit, melon, and citrus can be found with an earthy undertone and a big, full body. Smooth yet complex,” the brewery says. 6.8% ABV.⁣

Karst Brewing

  • Wet Hops on Rye – Tapped last Sunday, this rye ale was made with wet Centennial hops.

Klockow Brewing Co.

  • Munchkin Oktoberfest – A malt-forward, 6.2% ABV, traditional-style lager.

La Doña Cervecería

  • Ariana Grande – A double IPA made with Ariana hops that the brewery describes as floral and bitter with “lingering citrus undertones.”
  • John Mayer Monday – A lager with coffee.
  • Slow Burn – Tapped last Saturday, this is a chile pepper lager that’s clean lager up front with a slow spice burn at the finish, the brewery says.

Lake Monster Brewing

  • Loonatick Fresh Hop IPA – Brewed with freshly-picked wet Centennial hops from Mighty Axe hop farm.

Lupulin Brewing Company

  • Albertville Centennial – Brewed for the city of Albertville’s Centennial Celebration, this was “brewed in the style of a Pre-Prohibition lager, but with Centennial hops and fermented with a Kölsch yeast to enhance the fruity character of the hops.” 4.8% ABV. Available at the brewery and also in cans and draft near the city of Albertville.
  • Mighty Wet – Top Flight selection.

Northbound Smokehouse & Brewpub

  • Lost Boys – Top Flight selection.
  • Wild Rice Amber Lager – Tapped on Tuesday, September 24.

OMNI Brewing Co.

  • Barrel-Aged Léon – “Our third-anniversary beer, aged one year in the Barrel Room,” OMNI notes. This is one of four special releases for the brewery’s fourth-anniversary party on Saturday, September 28.
  • Melt – An anniversary passionfruit and raspberry smoothie sour to tap at Saturday’s anniversary party.
  • TBD – A dark sour to be named at the last minute. Available on Saturday at OMNI.
  • Vanilla FAD – On tap on Saturday.

Pantown Brewing Company

  • Hunter’s Paradise – “[Brewer] Nick wanted to put ‘The Northwoods in a glass’ so he brewed this beer with a healthy amount of wild rice and earthy hops,” the brewery says.

Revelation Ale Works

  • REVtoberfest – A traditional festbier, Revelation says, “With rich caramel notes, and a touch of bitterness on the back end.
  • Xtralovable DIPA – A juicy double IPA with orange, vanilla, papaya, and mango flavors. “Azacca hops in the boil, Mosaic in the whirl. Double-dry hopped with Azacca, Cashmere, and Simcoe,” the brewery says of its making.

Rustech Brewing

  • Blue Polar – A 5.3% ABV, 14 IBU blueberry cream ale. Tapped last week.

Single Speed Brewing

  • 007 – The Waterloo, IA brewery has made a collaboration with Dangerous Man. A double dry-hopped New England-style IPA. Part of the Nimble Series and the brewery’s first 16-ounce can.

Spilled Grain Brewhouse

  • Oktoberfest – A Märzen lager that will be featured at Saturday’s Oktoberfest party at the Spilled Grain parking lot.

Stacked Deck Brewing

  • The Hasselhoff – A new Oktoberfest beer that taps to kick off a seasonal celebration this Saturday.

Steel Toe Brewing

  • Floraine Blanc – Tapped on Thursday, this new Brewers Evolution series release is a “wine-like spritzy tart ale” whose name translates to “White Flower.” “Refreshing, tart, dry-hopped,” Steel Toe says, while “the aromas are of white peach, melon, kiwi and lime, with a ripe berry undertone…with a bright refreshing acidity finishing.” 6.2% ABV.

  • Ghost Hammer IPA – This IPA with lemon sorbet, hard candy, and spice flavors plus herbal and noble hop undertones, is available again.
  • Xocoveza – A MExican hot chocolate-style imperial stout with cocoa, cinnamon, coffee, nutmeg, vanilla, and a fruity and mildly heated pasilla pepper finish.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Dark Phase – “Dark Phase is an easy-drinking stout with all the character you want paired with a lighter body. Roastiness and a pleasant, milk chocolate-like sweetness are in perfect balance with a smooth, satisfying finish,” Surly says. Available in the new Frost Pack along with Furious, Xtra Citra Pale Ale, and Liquid Stardust.
  • Darkness – Top Flight selection.

Three variants will also be released at Darkness Day, bottled exclusively for weekend ticket holders:

  • Double Stuff Darkness – A rum-barrel aged Darkness with vanilla bean and cacao.
  • Mole Darkness – Aged in bourbon barrels with added vanilla beans, chocolate, cinnamon, and smoked chilis.
  • Old Fashioned Darkness – Inspired by the Old Fashioned cocktail, this Russian imperial stout was aged in rye barrels, with added Moroccan orange peel.

  • Neapolitan Barrel-Aged Black Ale – This is a barrel-aged black ale, aged in whiskey barrels and finished with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberries that makes its debut today.

Torg Brewery

  • Märzen – “This copper-colored, mildly hopped fest beer bursting with malt flavor will officially be unveiled on Friday,” the brewery says.

Town Hall Brewery

  • Grand Cru – The base beer for the barrel series Manhattan Reserve, this 9.8% ABV beer is on tap at the brewery in a limited appearance.

  • Door County Cherry Sour – Newly tapped, this 4% ABV, 9 IBU is an American kettle sour with Wisconsin-grown cherries.

  • Venn Fest – Malt-forward with caramel and floral hop notes. 5.4% ABV, 30 IBU.

Waconia Brewing Company

  • Mr. Rumtastic – Tapped this Thursday.

Waldmann Brewery

  • Märzen Oktoberfest  – On tap at the brewery’s weekend-long Oktoberfest part, along with a dry-hopped firkin on Friday night.

Wild Mind Artisan Ales

  • Time Gun – A fruity IPA with a slightly floral aroma, the brewery says, made with four New Zealand hop varieties that gives notes of grapefruit, apricot, and lime. 

Wooden Hill Brewing Company

  • Cahill Cream Ale – This cream ale features locally malted barley and locally grown hops and was brewed in collaboration with the Edina Historical Society to celebrate Edina’s Irish settlers and the 50th anniversary of the historical society. 6% ABV.

  • Pacer IPA –  A low calorie, low carb session IPA. Pouring at 4.5% ABV, 100 calories, and 3.5 carbs, this hazy IPA was made with oats for extra body, plus southern hemisphere hops and dry-hopping. To release nationwide next month.

Bad Axe Brewing

  • Oktoberfest – To tap at the brewery’s October 19 Oktoberfest party in Nisswa.

Falling Knife Brewing Co.

  • Kilted Pig – This smoked scotch ale will tap at the seventh-anniversary party of Smokey’s in East Bethel on October 5. It will also be served at the Blaine brewery’s taproom.

  • Med City Seltzer – Kinney Creek enters the hard seltzer scene with a bang on October 1 when it will debut a seltzer bar with a dozen flavor options including lime and spicy pineapple.

  • Chai Milk Stout Nitro – Returning soon, the brewery says. 5% ABV.

Surly Brewing Company

  • Yummi Bear – A new West Coast-style IPA to debut next week.

  • Oktoberfest Marzen – A smooth lager with toasted bread notes and a smooth cotton candy finish, the brewery says, with candied caramel on the nose. 6.7% ABV and on tap Monday.
  • Petunia’s Pumpkin Ale – A malt-forward ale with nutty flavors and pumpkin pie spice, named in honor of a former employee who survived a battle with lymphoma. 5.4% ABV and on tap Monday.

Waconia Brewing Company

  • Lunchbox Porter – Returning on October 14.
  • Munich Dunkel – Scheduled to debut on October 8 in the taproom.
