The Mash-Up: Themed releases for Cinco de Mayo and Star Wars Day

With over 170 breweries now pouring their beer in Minnesota, there’s always something new to try. To keep you up to date, we present The Mash-Up—our weekly rundown of new beers and seasonal releases in Minnesota from your favorite local and national breweries. Visit growlermag.com every Friday for the latest or sign up for a weekly email.

Whatever you celebrate, there is something for you this weekend. Catch Cinco de Mayo celebrations at La Doña Cervecería, FINNEGANS, Waconia Brewing Co., and several other breweries around the state, or on the same day enjoy beer history with The Blessing of the Maibock at Town Hall. For Star Wars fans, May 4 is Star Wars Day (May the “fourth” be with you…get it?) and many beers will be poured in support of the rebels or the Dark Side, depending where your allegiance lies. Then, in southern Minnesota, Forager and Little Thistle team up for Gathering in the Woods in Rochester.

With the season now fully turned over (we hope), new Mexican-style lagers, Pilsners, helles lagers, IPAs, pale ales, and honey beers are flooding the scene.

Each week, The Growler’s editorial team highlights five of the most tantalizing new beers hitting taps and store shelves that we’re most excited to try.

Forager Gathering In The Woods

“This is our blend of sour red ale and spontaneous lambic-style ale aged on Minnesota red raspberries and Minnesota-grown Hungarian cherries. Resting in the bottle for nine months, this sour ale has a low level of carbonation and bright assertive acidic tones which compliment the juicy cherry and ripe raspberry layers,” the brewery says. “An ale nearly three years in the making, we are happy to finally get it in your hands.” 6.4% ABV.

Lake Monster True Story Pale Ale

After debuting in the taproom, this pale ale is now available in 15-packs on 12-ounce cans. “True Story Pale Ale is a balanced, easy-drinking ale brewed with a complex blend of Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops and grains,” the brewery explains, delivering juicy, citrus flavors with a clean malty finish. 5.0% ABV, 45 IBU. It will be sold year-round in the taproom.

La Doña Cervecería Infierno de Mayo

“A helles lager brewed in collaboration with FINNEGANS Brew Co., and is hopped with Simcoe, Mandarina Bavaria, and Azacca hops. We ferment our version with our house Mexican lager yeast strain, resulting in a super sessionable, hop-forward yet clean-finishing lager. At 5.0% ABV, “try it with a lime, or not,” the brewery says. It taps this Saturday, May 4, at the brewery’s Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Schell’s Binary Storm

The latest Noble Star release is a mixed culture Berliner weisse aged on boysenberries. “Bright, sweet floral aromas radiate from the glass along with notes of Fruit Loops,” Schell’s says, adding, “The juicy, sweet-tart character of the boysenberries are on full display with a crisp, tangy acidity, and glowingly rich, jammy fruitiness.”

Duluth Cider King Carlos Tequila Oak-Aged Cider

Available today, this is a cider made with Minnesota apples and aged on tequila barrel staves. It’s the first in a continuing series of oak-aged ciders.
