Three Minnesota breweries are on the Brewers Association’s annual lists of the top 50 producing craft brewing companies in the U.S. and the 50 top overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume.
Summit Brewing Company, August Schell Brewing Company, and Surly Brewing Company came in at 24th, 25th, and 34th, respectively, on the craft brewery list, and 34th, 35th, and 44th on the overall list.
Summit and Schell’s have been on both lists since 2014, and always landing within one or two places of each other. Surly entered the fray in 2016, at 42nd on the craft brewing company list. In 2017, it edged onto both lists (39th in craft breweries; 49th overall), and has steadily climbed up both lists ever since.
In 2018, 40 of the top 50 overall brewing companies were small and independent.
