Hopefully everyone survived the recent cold spell and braved the chill to get out to see a show. If you didn’t, this weekend has plenty of hot shows to entice you.
The Current’s 11th Anniversary Party | First Avenue | Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23, 7pm both nights
The Current is nearly a teenager! How crazy is that? I still vividly remember the palatable excitement of their launch and am very happy they are still thriving. Every January they manage to put together an anniversary celebration that highlights some of the best bands that Minnesota has to offer, and this year is certainly no different, as many of these acts have headlined First Avenue on their own. Friday night features Low, John Mark Nelson, Mixed Blood Majority, Bad Bad Hats, and Bones & Beeker. Saturday’s party includes Tommy Stinson, Gramma’s Boyfriend, The Cactus Blossoms, Gospel Machine, and Bruise Violet. Limited tickets remain for both nights. $20 / 18+ / Buy tickets for Friday and/or Saturday
Solid Gold with Suzie and UMAMI | Turf Club | Friday, January 22nd, 8pm
Solid Gold has been relatively quiet the last few years, but if the gap between their fantastic 2008 debut album “Bodies of Water” and their 2012 sophomore album “Eat Your Young” are any indication, simple math would indicate that 2016 might see the release of their long-awaited third album (hey, I’m just doing the math, don’t yell at me if it doesn’t happen). Either way, expect some new/unreleased songs regardless. Openers Suzie and UMAMI will get the grooves going early. $10 / 21+ / Buy tickets (Update: this show is now sold out)
Larry Graham & Graham Central Station + PHO | Paisley Park | Friday, January 22nd, 9pm
The ever-unpredictable Prince is performing two solo “Piano and a Microphone” shows at his own Paisley Park tonight, Thursday, Jan. 21. While both of those shows sold out rather quickly this past Saturday afternoon, it was announced late Wednesday that 100 tickets for both the 8pm and 11pm shows will be sold at Paisley Park’s will call starting at 3pm today.

Prince also took to Twitter to announce more fun for this weekend at Paisley Park. Late yesterday, he tweeted that the great Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone will perform with his band, Graham Central Station, with local up and comers PHO opening the Friday night funk fest. Keep your eyes peeled to Prince’s Twitter account for more details about the weekend’s festivities. $50 / All Ages / 9pm – Tickers are first-come, first-served, so bundle up and line up early at Paisley Park
